Fur thieves, who murder trappers when they refuse to give up their pelts at a low price, occupy the attention of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police. The leader of the gang is Victor Renaud (Dick Curtis), also the mayor of the small Canadian town where the gang is headquartered. Lucky Kerrigan is broken from the mounted service for apparent disobedience to orders, which results in the death of a fellow Mountie. Lucky, working undercover, aids the Mounties in rounding up the gang and gains back his uniform, and also the love of Gabrielle Renaud (Adele Mara), Renaud's sister who was unaware of his criminal activities.
The thing about Mountie films is that they're basically Westerns with better scenery and good guys in uniform. On that basis, it would have been cool to see this one in color, because the backdrop for this story was simply gorgeous and there were at least a half dozen Mounties running around most of the time. Heck, even the bad guys seemed a colorful lot with their checkered flannels and all those stolen furs.
This was my first time seeing Russell Hayden in a lead role; I most often associate him with being Hopalong Cassidy's sidekick Lucky Jenkins, and he kept the 'Lucky' moniker for most of his career in film. The odd thing here is he was introduced in the story as Lucky Lawson, but later on when he's discharged from his duties, a quick glance at his papers show his name as Kerrigan. About that scene, when he was stripped of his Mountie shirt and whipped by his former comrades, it was reminiscent of the opening credits for Chuck Connors' mid-Sixties TV show 'Branded'. So maybe there was some inspiration here.
Hayden gets some comic relief support, actually a lot of it, from Dub Taylor, who similarly used the nickname Cannonball throughout his early career in movie Westerns. Starting out in 1939 with Wild Bill Elliott (The Taming of the West), Taylor appeared numerous times as Cannonball with Charles Starrett in his Durango Kid films, and then made a bunch with Russell Hayden in the late Forties. In this picture, he winds up running into and falling off of things quite often, and if I knew he was going to wind up in Red River so many times, I would have kept count.
The story itself is pretty standard, as Lucky Lawson investigates Victor Renaud (Dick Curtis), mayor of Red River and owner of the local trading company. Together with his band of henchmen, Renaud terrorizes the area's trappers who find it more profitable to sell their furs down river. Matters for Renaud get further complicated when his niece Gabrielle (Adele Mara) arrives from school, intent on reclaiming ownership of her father's trading company which her uncle has assumed control of. Things are fairly predictable, as Gabrielle first sides with her uncle, but gradually learns what a 'skunkhead' he really is. That's Cannonball's description, not mine.
Columbia Pictures continued the tradition of featuring a host of songs in their pictures, provided here by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. They're an entertaining lot, and I particularly enjoyed the colorful renditions of 'Driftin' on a Dream' and 'Bluebonnet Lane'. There's also a more serious number offered at the funeral of Mountie Chuck who dies in the line of duty, 'The Last Goodbye'.
Overall, the picture flashes by in a quick fifty seven minutes, but there's a fair amount of action from start to finish. I wouldn't have thought so going in, but this one offers up one your better Western brawls between Russell Hayden and Dick Curtis when they go at it and really bust up the Trading Company store. If that wasn't enough, they tangle once more at the finale, winding up in Red River, and you guessed it, Cannonball wasn't far behind.
Russell Hayden was perhaps one of Hoppy's best sidekicks, woman chaser, brash and brazen. He puts on the same persona in this action packed pseudo-western but can't carry the film quite like Hoppy. Dub Taylor adds as the comic sidekick Cannonball, much like Gabby Hayes and California Karlson in the Hoppy films. It still has the great good guy versus bad guy values of all the genre films in that era. Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys add the music, often when its out of sync with the plot but I guess they had to work it in somewhere.
