A lumpectomy, sometimes called a partial mastectomy, is the surgical removal of an area of breast tissue. This is as opposed to a total mastectomy, in which all the breast tissue would be removed. A wire localization is done by radiology to help your surgeon to locate the area of breast tissue that needs to be removed.

I am due for a lumpectomy on Monday, and am concerned about the guidewire insertion procedure. Everyone I have spoken to says the procedure for this and the insertion of the radiation ink is very, very painful, and one cannot get any pain relief or local anesthesia. Does anyone out there have any
I had two wire guided lumpectomies, the first was when they inserted the wires, not painful, nothing to stress about, they removed the cancer, but I had to go back for a second lumpectomy a month later because the found precancerous cells in samples they took around the area of the lumpectomy, they left a marker in after
What is wire localisation? Wire localisation is performed in order to pinpoint the exact place within the breast where the area of change is when the surgeon cannot feel it. The “localisation" is performed by the radiologist (x-ray doctor) who places a narrow guide-wire into your breast so that the tip lies within the affected area.
When is guide-wire localised breast surgery recommended? Guide-wire localised breast surgery may be recommended when: cancer is confirmed and the area is being removed as part of 'breast conservation' treatment (wide local excision or 'lumpectomy') and the remaining breast tissue is being preserved;; there is an
A radiologist will use a mammogram, breast ultrasound or breast MRI as a guide and insert a very thin wire or radioactive seed into the breast in the area of the cancer. The surgeon then uses this wire or seed as a guide to find and remove the tumor during surgery.
I have had three wire-guided biopsies -- I think more often referred to as a "needle localization". It needs to be done prior to an incisional biopsy or lumpectomy when the lesion is not visible or palpable. The wire needs to be inserted to guide the surgeon as to where to cut. It's not much more of a procedure
