today in class we talked about

depression.

we filled our papers with phrases like

anxious thoughts,
                                resigned actions,
                                                         irregular behaviours,
                                                                                  defeat.

we learned about

how those with depression are different from
quote-unquote "normal people."

my eyes, dry from staring --

i guess my teacher forgot about the
strength
many individuals dredge up from
deep inside themselves
just so they can permit themselves to
breathe

i guess my teacher forgot that
normal
is a very strange word

he
looked around the room and explained that
sometimes
it's hard for these people to get out of bed in the morning.

today in class
i sat in my pretty little chair watching peoples' pretty little smiles,
writing down unpretty words.
