Book descriptionWell written, but the protagonist didnt strike me as particularly authentic. Thats a problem, as the book is an overgrown character sketch based on the true life of one Dutch settler in New Amsterdam, Gretje Reyniers. The real Gretje, a prostitute, money lender, and woman-about-town, left behind a significant criminal record dotted with escapades like mooning sailors and measuring genitalia and declaring herself the peoples whore. I felt like the authors interpretation of all the space between those episodes (you know, her actual life) just didnt fit. Sure, people are more nuanced than their rap sheets would indicate, but the fictional Gretje, depicted mostly through lots of cold and melancholy philosophical musings , doesnt seem capable -- or worthy! -- of such colorful crimes.
