In a utopian society created at the end of the third world war, a female warrior who has been plucked from the badlands begins to see cracks in this new facade. And what does this community have planned for the rest of humankind?

I have just returned from the English dubbed early premier of Masamune Shirow's Appleseed. And all I have to say is BRAVO! this movie rocked. Barring my own opinion as a Shirowdite I would have to say this movie will mainly appeal to Shirow aficionados, like your truly or Joe Movie-Watcher who knows nothing of the Appleseed universe but wants to see a good anime/CG movie with good action and incredible CG work.
The world has gone through yet another world war. To safeguard man's existence a Utopian society was made and a new race was created, Bioroids (synthetic humans) to shepherd humanity into the next generation. But humans being what they are are jealous of their own creations and the power they hold over them. So militant factions arise to destroy the custodians of their future, an act of genocide to secure the future themselves without the aide of Bioroids. Arise Deunan Knute the daughter of a famed military Colonel to combat the masses of malcontent soldiers and terrorists. Only she holds the key to the future of man and Bioroid alike.
I must admit that the story needed a few key elements such as a stronger back story and better characterization on certain people such as Hitomi who I thought gave a two dimensional performance in a three dimensional movie. But manga like most written work it's hard to compress volumes of detailed work into a two hour medium especially concerning Shirow's work. For anyone who hasn't read any of his work which is usually put out by Dark Horse Comics the man puts footnotes in all his early work either at the bottom of the page or the side. So going from one medium with too much information to another medium with not enough info is a little irritating. Especially when they don't convey that Briareos is a full body cyborg, not a brain in a "box" or a robot. So when he coughs in his dying scene everybody in the theater laughed 'cause they thought it was funny/cheesy for a "robot" to cough while dying. Suffice it to say the movie had some kinks.
On the other had the cinematography was incredible which wasn't more evident than in the action scenes. the lighting and camera angles for some shots show that director Shinji Aramaki has a sharp and precise vision in regards to the action scenes. The CG is the best Japan's put out to date. With such realism and quality my eyes scanned every inch of the screen trying to take in all the beauty that was before me. With such writing and directing credits under his belt as Megazone 23, Metal Skin Panic Madox 01, and Bubblegum Crisis Aramaki clearly came from the old school of anime, but will quickly earn his Masters in this new school if he keeps putting out solid works such as Appleseed. In an age where computers have almost perfected creating a facsimile of reality it is clear that Appleseed will be a benchmark upon which all other CG/anime movies will be judged.
In conclusion I give this movie 8 out of 10.
PROS- Enjoyable movie, good action, great cinematography, good story.
CONS- some cliché' scenes, hard to express the depth of Appleseed in 2 hrs.
Well, not funny ha-ha but at least interesting. Your humble reviewer used to review films professionally (back when dinosaurs walked the earth) and also worked in Hollywood for a short term. Talking to an old friend (they are all old at this point) I mentioned that the biggest surprise and pleasure to me at my stage of life was discovering Japanese animation, and I had lately been watching a number of features and series, many in the original Japanese with subs, in fact. The friend asked, what is your favorite? I said, I was not sure. He then asked, which one would you want to see over, if you had a chance? My answer was this film, Appleseed. It is amazing at so many levels. The animation is to die for, especially the eyes. Wow. The story (in spite of the other reviews) is fine, and, as you may discover, a heck of a lot better than the official sequel. And I love the names. Brilliant. If I ever get another dog, I intend to name the animal either Deunan -- which sounds so wonderfully Scottish, it could be the next Mel Gibson movie -- or Briareos, which is one of the few names I can recall that sounds longer than it actually is. As you may have noticed, this is not a traditional review. But it is indeed as review. Astonishing film. I dare you to see it and not marvel at what is coming out of Japan.
The film has enough originality to interest demanding fans of the genre.
