Excerpt from An Essay on Music: Pronounced Before the Middlesex Musical Society, Sept. 9, A. D. 1807, at Dunstable, (Mass.)

When the morning stars sang together, and the sons of God shouted for joy, man, in his state of innocence, must have caught the divine ardor. His soul, elevated with devotion, would naturally express its feelings in the simme music of nature.
