14 May 2014 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) established a free-trade zone in North America; it was signed in 1992 by Canada, Mexico, and the United States and took effect on Jan. 1, 1994. NAFTA immediately lifted tariffs on the majority of goods produced by the signatory nations.
This guide was written with input from the Governments of Canada and Mexico and concentrates on explaining Chapters 4 and 5 of the NAFTA, where the rules of origin and procedural obligations relating to customs administration are described. We have also provided sources of further information in the three countries.
