Dopo la Locandiera, Goldoni mette in scena Le donne curiose. La lontananza da Venezia, i lunghi anni trascorsi dalla data della prima rappresentazione, avevano fatto decantare la "pericolosità" del vero argomento della commedia, ben dissimulato dietro le innocenti risorse comiche del tipico difetto muliebre, la curiosità. E da Parigi Goldoni rivela apertamente le proprie intenzioni di un tempo, facendo tra l'altro risiedere in quel motivo nascosto la ragione autentica degli applausi entusiasti di veneziani e stranieri al teatro. Stranieri, infatti, e precisamente inglesi, erano coloro che a Venezia avevano importato il sistema delle logge, ma veneziani coloro che, in quelle "conversazioni" di soli uomini avevano individuato una nuova forma di socialità.
