After being struck by lightning, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) is reborn. Now having super speed, he has a new name. The Flash. With the help of his friends, he fights crime and find other metahumans like him. And he will do anything to stop them. He is the Flash.
Barry Allen is a Central City police forensic scientist with a reasonably happy life, despite the childhood trauma of a mysterious red and yellow lightning killing his mother and framing his father. All that changes when a massive particle accelerator accident leads to Barry being struck by lightning in his lab. Coming out of coma nine months later, Barry and his new friends at S.T.A.R labs find that he now has the ability to move at superhuman speed. Furthermore, Barry learns that he is but one of many affected by that event, most of whom are using their powers for evil. Determined to make a difference, Barry dedicates his life to fighting such threats, as The Flash. While he gains allies he never expected, there are also secret forces determined to aid and manipulate him for their own agenda.
Season 1 of The Flash was exceptional with everything needed in a Sci-fi Action Thriller. Good story line with exciting twists and a superhero, what else do we need. But since the start of season 2, it has gone from bad to terrible numerous times. Bad acting, dismal plot and sometimes hilarious CGI didn't help its cause either. In the era of exceptional CGI in TV, with shows like GoT and Viking, this looks like a B-Grade Sci-fi movie.
I watched the first couple seasons of The Arrow but by the third season - yeesh. The entire cast was about 15 years old and silly beyond belief. The Flash follows the same superhero formula and the boredom of it sets in immediately. The mysterious mentor. The tough disbelieving cop. The BFF who knows nothing but will be shocked, tearful, angry by the inevitable truth. The love interest who is perpetually crabby. The nerdy sidekick. The one-armed man subplot about the death of a loved one. Superhero abilities and bad guys - interchangeable with anything on TV today. What annoys me the most, though, is the 20-something "doctor." Hollywood loves the young hot girl playing doctor. Twelve years of higher education, internship, residency and then presumably a bunch of years of experience - all by the age of 26.
No. Flash and Arrow are not part of the same universe as Man of Steel and "Batman v Superman". In the movie universe, the Flash will be played by actor Ezra Miller. Tony Todd For the first crossover you do not. Each episode tells a largely self contained story, with characters from each show simply traveling to the other one's city to fight a villain.
In the season two crossover that begins with the Flash episode "Legends of Today" you probably should watch the Arrow episode "Legends of Yesterday" as the two episodes tell one story. If you don't watch "Legends of Yesterday" then you won't know how the story from "Legends of Today" ends. These two episodes also lead into the spinoff series "Legends of Tomorrow". Every season, there will be a meta-human villain, but here are the main ones:
Season One: Harrison Wells(Actually Eobard Thawne aka the Reverse Flash)

Season Three: Alchemy, Grodd, and Savitar
Season Four: The Thinker (so far) There is no exact speed but as every episode premieres, Barry gets faster and faster and eventually cantravel through time.
In the episode 'Tricksters'Barry / The Flash is forced to run over 600mph otherwise a bomb attached to his wrist by The Tricksters will explode. Barry removes the bomb via Harrison Wells' request , vibrating through a wall and leaving the bomb on the other side.
In addition, in the episode 'Fast Enough'Barry / The Flash makes the decision to travel back in time by creating a wormhole to the past by running at super speeds. Dr. Martin Stein adds that he will need to be running at Mach 2 to be successful, any slower will result in his death. He then runs this speed and is successful in traveling back in time.
