To win a bet, an eccentric British inventor beside his Chinese valet and an aspiring French artist, embarks on a trip full of adventures and dangers around the world in exactly 80 days.
An adventurer, Passepartout, ends up accompanying time-obsessed English gentleman, Phileas Fogg, on a daring mission to journey around the world. Fogg has wagered with members of his London club that he can traverse the world in 80 days. Along the way, they encounter many interesting 19th Century figures and have many exciting and suspenseful situations in their voyage around the world.
This movie should have been sent around the toilet bowl in 80 nano seconds. I know that this was a Disney Movie, and more importantly, a kids movie, but Disney should know better. They could have done a lot better than this. This movie was so forced, they could not have had a more contrived way of bringing about this silly plot of going around the world to escape with a Chinese artifact. If I was new to this country, or to this planet even, I may have mistaken this movie for a comedy adventure. Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, I have been here long enough to recognize what should and shouldn't be classified as a comedy adventure. Around the World in 80 Days... um... not.
At first I did compare this to Mike Todd's version. But then I realized it was a Jackie Chan Movie (and I'm a big fan of his) with all the stuff that entails. It is a wonderful parody of the older movie with many funny things, including a ton of kung fu movie action. There are a bunch of orientals chasing "passpartou" around the world (at least to China), and a marvelous performance by a talented actress: Cécile De France. I'd never seen her before, but she is cool.
They go to some different places, but, like Mike Todd's opus, every now and then there is a surprise guest star to surprise you and light things up. I had a really good time, and you will too...
Finds a winning formula: Chan provides the action, various exotic lands serve up props begging to be employed in Chan-style combat, Coogan brings the dry wit, a minor constellation of surprise guest stars provides razzle-dazzle, and a steady stream of mild chuckles helps the whole fandango fly by painlessly.
No. For the most part this is a film that draws loose inspiration from the Verne novel. A more faithful adaptation was made in 1956.
To name a few specific and obvious changes from the novel:
-In the film, Phileas Fog is an eccentric inventer who takes a bet for a position of auhority. In the book he was a recluse who spent most of his time playing cards and the bet was simply a sum of money.
-Passpartout in the book was much more open with Fog. He was being honest when he said he was French, and there was no sub-plot about him taking advantage of Fog to achieve a hidden agenda. Also in the film he is responsible for the bank robbery, despite having nothing to do with it in the book.
-While the bank robbery did happen in the book, it is given a larger role and serves as motivation for the characters. Lord Kelvin also pins it on Fog as an excuse to keep him from winning the bet. In the book, the robbery happened of-screen and had nothing to do the main characters. Inspector Fix only mistook Fog for the robber because his appearance matched the description he had been given of the actual criminal.
-In the film, Inspector Fix is depicted as a dim-witted officer who is manipulated by Kelvin. In the book, he was much more reasonable, having mistaken Fog for the robber based on his appearance matching the description. He also eventually helps Fog and releases him when he realizes his mistake.
-The love interest in the book was an Indian princess, not a French artist. a5c7b9f00b
