29 Jun 2011 Delete available and run sudo apt-get update. Then try to install a package. If that doesn't fix your problem, do it again, and as a third step delete all files in /var/lib/dpkg/updates BEFORE you try to install another package.

15 May 2015 Run the command it tells you to sudo dpkg --configure -a and it should be able to correct itself. If it doesn't try running sudo apt-get install -f (to fix broken packages) and then try running sudo dpkg --configure -a again. Just make sure you have internet access available so that you can download any dependencies.

This error occurs when u stop the any installation in-between either using terminal or Ubuntu app center. run the command sudo dpkg --configure -a time please don't use sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/lock sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/lock. or anything like that. Decent way to do this is sudo killall apt-get
