I am aware that the public is well supplied with the biographies and autobiographies of our distinguished men, of the generals who have led our armies to victory, of the statesmen who have shaped the policy of the government, of eminent divines, poets, moralists, historians, philosophers, lawyers, legislators, even of criminals, who have spent their lives in solitary confinement, or perished on the scaffold. But the common or ordinary men, those who have failed to reach the summit of fame have not come to the front and given their experience in the battle of life. Such is the design of the author. It will be mv object in the present work to portray, in plain and. Concise language, the struggles of a lifetime.
