10 Dec 2006 I have a '91 4runner v6 with a manual tranmission. The ECU appears to be fried. Can I use the ECU from an automatic in the vehicle or are they totally different. I understand the manual ECU will not work in an Auto equipped rig, but will an Auto ECU.
18 Oct 2007 Advised that the problem could be originating from the fact that the ecu was not changed, but the car ran fine for almost a week after the conversion before the problem started. Help!!! I have started on my conversion and just to fool around I pluged in my manual ECU in place of the Automatic ECU. 12 May 2011 I've searched and found that a lot of people who've done the swap has just kept there auto ecu to operate the vehicle. By doing this the ecu will throw a CEL. So, If I have an auto car, and need an ecu I must get an auto ecu? Could I at least test to see if it runs with the manual ECU? It will start and run, but an auto car needs an auto ECU or the transmission will not work properly. You'll only have 1st through 3rd gear. 4th won't work without the auto specific ECU.
