When detective Mathias Rivoallan is found murdered by the gang led by the Nigerian Markudi, detectives Jimenez, Aurore, Ouessem and Tony decide to revenge the death of his friend. The vigilantes plot bloodshed, executing Markudi, his brother Bola (Doudou Masta) and the other gangsters in the abandoned building where they are gathered. However, things go wrong when the watchman arrives and the violent gang subdues the quartet and tortures them. Meanwhile, the lookouts of the gang hear explosions, sirens and the weird sound of the rabble.
A posse of crooked cops, malevolent gangsters and a horde of walking dead are the centre point of this gruesome, tight, action packed, claustrophobic tale of retribution and escape. Penned like animals, on the top floor of a deserted high-rise block, these two opposing gangs find that they are not alone in the lair of bloodthirsty corridors of death. Joining forces to survive, they must reach ground level together or perish. Loaded with a bad ass attitude, guns, axes and extremely creative hand-to-hand combat sequences that project the fears and paranoia that are the fighting forces behind the need to survive, when caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time.
An uneasy alliance develops between hardened criminals and the policemen raiding their apartment block as a zombie plague wages outside in this French take on the horror subgenre. While hardly exploring new or original territory, the film has some memorable touches, most notably as the group torment a female zombie pinned to the ground and talk about gang banging her, highlighting just monstrous non-zombies can be. There is also a well done bit in which one man plows into a crowd of zombies as if he is playing rugby. For the most part though, 'La Horde' never reaches its potential. There are a lot of zombie attacks, but they occur so quickly with rapid fire editing that there is no chance to bask in the madness of bodies ripped apart. The macho characters get on the nerves quite quickly too with the film soon becoming less about cops and criminals united together and more about tough men competing to show off how tough they are. There is one prominent female character, however, she is so bitter and twisted that she remains hard to warm too throughout and her actions in the film final's scene leave a sour taste in the mouth. Fortunately, the film focuses largely on Yves Pignot, who brings much comic relief as a war veteran relishing in the chance to use his army training again to fend off the zombie plague, but this is still hard a film to recommend without reservations.
Recent years have shown us an influx of both zombie flicks and French gore flicks, so it was only inevitable that France would release a modern gory zombie flick. In the past, the French have delivered some "classic" zed movies, like those of Jean Rollin or Jesús Franco. However, very few of them were of any great quality.
'La Horde,' on the other hand, is a good return to the zombie subgenre for France. The story takes place almost entirely in a rundown urban tenement where a small group of police officers are attempting to silently take down a gang of criminals who have set up shop there. Unfortunately, their cover is blown and the criminals (whose demographic makeup seems a teensy bit racist) take the police squad hostage. This is only the beginning of the problems for both the criminals and the cops as the building (and, apparently, the entire city) is overrun by a horde of flesh-eating zombies. . .
These days, it seems that it's pretty difficult to make a truly original zombie film (heck, it's hard to make a truly original film in any genre or subgenre). The most the fans tend to ask for is even just a bit of uniqueness. Give us a new "type" of zombie or a new cause or anything and we'll be happy. Even a new setting is a big leap forward in this subgenre. Unfortunately, 'La Horde' didn't try for anything overly new or original. Even the plot is quite similar to that of the forgettable American horror 'Dead Heist' (2007). However, what the film lacked in originality, it made up for it other areas, pretty much entirely in the visual areas. The overall look of the film is quite good. It has a bit of a shot-on-video feel that many horror fans are not a fan of, but it has been gritted-up enough where it's not too overly distracting. Also, the set design for the interior of the building and the effects for the exterior shots are very good.
What matters more than pretty much anything else in a film like this, though, are the zombies. There are plenty of them and they are angry. Not only that, but they're pretty damn strong to go along with it (even if that negates Max Brooks's rules of zombie traits). More importantly, they are hungry. The zombie attack scenes (both by and against the zombies) are viciously violent and wickedly gory. Blood spurts, head explosions, flesh tears. . . it's all there and it's all very well done. This was, clearly, the main priority of the film and it was a great success in this category.
Overall, the story and characters aren't overly fresh; but, what the film lacks in originality, it makes up for in fantastic set design, great special FX, brutal violence, and grotesque zombie gore. Highly recommended to fans of the subgenre (especially of the "running zombie" films).

This zombie flick has only been released in a cut version in France, neither the DVD nor the Blu-ray contain the Uncut Version. Right at the beginning three long scenes featuring the character of Jimenez were left out: two on the cemetery and the following one in the alley showing Jimenez beating up a guy. There's no real explanation for deleting this scenes but they can be seen in the bonus material of the French DVD/BD. 646f9e108c
