17 years ago, immortals first appeared on the battlefields of Africa. Later, rare, unknown new immortal lifeforms began appearing among humans, and they became known as "Ajin" (demi-humans). Just before summer vacation, a Japanese high school student is instantly killed in a traffic accident on his way home from school. However, he is revived, and a price is placed on his head. Thus begins a boy's life on the run from all of humankind.
A freak accident reveals to young Kei Nagai that he is more than your average teenager. After being ran over by a truck, Kei is brought back to life by a mysterious substance known as Invisible Black Matter. He is now an "Ajin", or demi-human, one of very few immortal beings in existence. With no one to turn to but a childhood friend, Kei must fight for survival not only for himself but for the fate of innocent humans threatened by an evil Ajin known as Mr. Sato, the Soldier of God. Under constant hunt from government specialists, bounty hunters, and other Ajin--Kei will discover the depths of his hidden strength, and what it truly means to be a human being in the face of terrifying and insurmountable odds.
This show is a complete mess. I started watching this show because I heard the protagonist is more or less a sociopath. I've watched Dexter, which had the same conceit, and I enjoyed it (for the first 4 seasons at least).
This show doesn't really know what it wants to be. I had no problem with the show having no clear good guy, but the way it portrayed people being wishy washy and unclear in their motivations was absolutely infuriating. The only I guy i actually rooted for was Sato, who I think was supposed to be the true "bad guy" in a show full of bad guys. Nevertheless, I only liked him for being clear, concise, and true to his character.
I was sick of the weaknesses of every character. Kei, the "hero", doesn't even follow the logical progression of his sociopathic character. I expected a big reveal of his selfishness at the end of the series, but the show didn't even give me that.
There was so much potential for this series. I'm bummed because I was so close to loving this series considering its overall themes.
Really enjoyed the anime, it is a shounen anime (aimed primarily at a young male audience, typically characterized by action-filled plots). It had its share of issues but overall a good watch.
Storyline: Standard run of the mill story of Human vs Something Unnatural, Ajin in this case, a human which can't be killed, they also have a ghost-like companion which they can call to do there bidding. What it had working for it was the constant development of characters focused plot and the fast-paced storytelling, time was not wasted on useless drawn out fight sequences. Love a Shounen anime which is story driven. (8/10) Animation: Unlike other anime, this was a 3D CGI, would say decent most of the time, but at first it felt too erratic and took time to get used to, most of the times the body movements felt slow and unnatural, only during action sequences there was smooth flow. The biggest reason why people will not like the anime is the animation. (4/10) Action: Really enjoyed it, the fight sequences were tactical based and not simply overpowering someone mindlessly. Good use of mind games, strategy, ability and modern weapons. (8/10) Characters: One of the few anime where the bad guy was more interesting and intriguing than the supposed lead. There is no clear good vs bad here, survival, self-motivation is the biggest driven forces. (8/10)
