A space shuttle mission investigating Halley's Comet brings back a malevolent race of space vampires who transform most of London's population into zombies. The only survivor of the expedition and British authorities attempt to capture a mysterious but beautiful alien woman who appears responsible.
The space shuttle Churchill is assigned to observe the Halley's Comet under the command of Col. Tom Carlsen. They see a strange form attached to the comet and Carlsen goes with a team to investigate. They find three humanoid life forms in caskets and they bring them to the Churchill. However, Earth loses contact with the shuttle and the Space Research Center sends another spacecraft to search the Churchill. They find the crew dead and the shuttle burnt and one rescue pod missing. They bring the humanoids to Earth and soon Dr. Hans Fallada and his team discover that the Space Girl is a sort of vampire and drains the life force from people transforming them into zombies. When the authorities find that Col. Tom Carlsen has survived, they summon him to explain what happened in the Churchill. Carlsen tells an incredible story about the three aliens and he teams up with Col. Colin Caine trying to save mankind from the evil vampires from the space.
This is species already hatching into a beautiful model (Mathilda May). A smashing baby with an urge to kiss and kill!
The movie begins with a strong launch, and infected by a bore-virus throughout the middle to end.
The weakest spot is the presentation of the basic plot/story. As you should have compared it, Natasha Henstridge's Species got the same plot, but adds up much interesting side plot and not mentioning good actions and strong clymatic ending.
This explain why Patrick Stewart joins the fleet of enterprise in Star Trek Next Generation; he wanted to find more models in glass cage, floating inside Halley-Comet.
A must see for a science fiction fans.
I watched 'Lifeforce' for the first time around 1990 on video tape. Rediscovering it on Blu-ray disc a quarter of a century later is however like watching it for the first time. Not only does HD a lot more justice to a 70mm movie than a tape did, but also the Director's Cut runs a quarter of an hour longer than the old cinema version. Most cuts happened during the first third of the movie: the opening scenes in space are shortened considerably, much taking place during the titles now, not after them, and also when the SAS agent begins to investigate what has happened on the spacecraft, the dialogs were cut by several minutes. These are obviously no censorship cuts (I mean, what do you think could have been cut for that reason if the zombies and the full frontal nudity remained?), but nevertheless I'm really opposed to the short version since I watched the longer version, because the extended scenes in space are impressive, and the investigation contains more mystery and suspense if it is not over too quickly. Mind you, the second half of the movie is a bit rushed even in the extended version, take the scene when they visit the Prime Minister for instance, blink and you missed it. No tea, thanks, got to go now...
The ambition of the expensive production is admittedly hampered somewhat by the ludicrous story, but 'Lifeforce' deserves to be a cult movie for a simple reason: Nobody can make a movie like that - nevertheless they did. 25 million dollar movies usually are well calculated factory products, carefully balanced and adjusted to the taste of a major audience with many test screenings. You can't do 'Bloodsucking Zombies Meet My Girlfriend From Mars' with a huge budget, any reasonable Hollywood producer would think you are insane. 'Lifeforce' just pulls it off, though. It is a wild mixture of '2001', 'Alien', 'Quatermass', and on top of it all, the sexiest female star since 'Barbarella'. What's not to love?
2 real possibilities, firstly that they're both dead and their energy released as with the rest of the victims. Secondly that they are still alive and preserved on the ship and will return with Halley's comet in the mid 21st centuary Open to interpretation, either the energy of the human souls has been used to revive the vampires in their crystal coffins or the humans have actually become the new vampires and are preserved until the ship returns to Earth with Halley's comet. The only released version in Germany e.g. is the Theatrical Version. In the UK and US on the other hand, the only available DVD Version is the longer Original Version, referred to as Director's Cut. Lots of footage got cut out but most of the cuts were probably made for pace. Lots of scenes refering to vampires have been removed. Apart from that, the investigations of incidents with vampires, which have been cut out from the Theatrical Version, are much shorter as well. Some scenes really benefit from this because the timing is better but in most cases, the Director's Cut is the better and more convincing version. In total there are more than 100 hundred differences between both versions resulting in a difference of more than 14 minutes. a5c7b9f00b
