While the Blue Ensign was used for military and naval purposes, the Red Ensign was used for representing India in most international events. The Star of India had a star with the words Heaven's light our guide around them, and was the badge of the Order of the Star of India, a chivalric order of knighthood.

It was also later used as a medallion for all the King Emperors of India. India's Old flag was part of the Union Jack themed flags of the commonwealth

9 May 2013 Jewel in the Crown Dept: For some reason, I never realized there was a specifically Indian British flag. It changed over time, too. I've seen the British Canadian flag; given that standard design across the Empire, it makes sense that there'd be an Indian version also. Much such info here:
9 Dec 2017 The motto "Heaven's Light Our Guide", was registered in 1929, it is that of the Order of the Star of India and of the old indian troop ships which embarked their passengers at Portsmouth. The supporters and crest were added in 1970. The sea lion and sea unicorn are a maritime version of the Royal Crest
