A race of non-corporeal, parasitic aliens who go from planet to planet looking for hosts have come to Earth and basically taken over the human race. It's believed that, once inside a body, all memories of the host human are gone. Some few free humans remain hidden from them, forming a resistance group. When an alien Seeker captures a girl named Melanie and puts a Wanderer in her body, she hopes to find out where the remaining humans are gathered, but Melanie, a strong fighter able to converse with the alien in her commandeered body, convinces the Wanderer to say nothing. Disappointed by the lack of progress (though suspecting an empathy for the human), the Seeker informs the Wanderer that she'll be removed and placed in a new host while she herself will enter Melanie. With human lives at risk, Melanie convinces Wanderer to run away and hide out with the humans, but finding them doesn't mean they'll allow an alien presence among them. Jared (Melanie's boyfriend) wants her dead, but Jeb (Melanie's uncle) wants to wait, and Ian, tasked with guarding her, finds himself siding with Jeb. As Ian begins to fall for Melanie, a strange love triangle develops, with Ian wanting Wanderer (inhabiting Melanie's body), Jared wanting Melanie (imprisoned inside her own body), and no one knowing any way to separate the two without killing both.
When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.
This is not close to a classic sci-fi film. It had the potential to do so, but it was lost about 20 minutes in. It is not a romance film either and the romance element seemed to be rather forced. They did add a spiritual element (not religions). That was rather interesting, but it was not close to the entire film.

The first half of the film gives an avid description of the futuristic environment created. This was fairly interesting and you were able to appreciate the dialog between the characters. It gave you a good idea of how they thought and how they interacted with one another. Guys will like it for the bit of action and the exploration and girls will like it for the main character coming out of her shell.
In the second half it very nearly killed the movie. If you hated twilight you should fast forward for about a half an hour. You will probably watch a better version of the film then most people. It tries to convey the complexities of a romance two people in the same body, that is poorly executed and should not be watched. It might have worked out if the entire film was about that, but it is currently a sad excuse for romance. Then the film picks up and goes into a more spiritual tone, that leaves the viewer with a sense of hope.
How to fix The film has so many key ideas it wishes to convey, that the viewer cannot fully appreciate any one. They should have made it into a hour and a half film and removed the romance. It was either that or hack the majority of the story and make a proper romance.
Overall Characters The acting was done well. I felt the characters were not introduced well enough, but is not unforgivable. It also has a rather great dialog,that you can almost understand the thoughts of all the characters. Plot The plot has a rather brilliant premise and gives a new social environment, that is fun to learn about. The storyline was consistent and was fun to watch. Sadly the director/writer tried to use to many main motives for the film, that are not fully expressed. This leaves the viewer with a rather muddled version of all the themes.
Sadly I believe this may be the worst of all Andrew Niccol's work. He is a great director and I always said he was special, because he never made a film that was not great. I can no longer say that. I think the Host does hold up as better that average film and is great for a Stephenie Meyer book. 7/10
Picked this up to rent on a whim noticing that it was a sci-fi movie. Got more than I was prepared for.
Loved the story and was thoroughly engaged in it from start to finish. Few things here and there that were noticeable and did tend to pull me away from the story a little but not much and not enough to really quibble about. Just the idea of how this could really be.. keeps your mind reeling. Very thought provoking. The acting was good. Some of the sound mixing for voices seemed to not line up right at times or was off or even overdone. BUT BASICALLY, IF YOUR A SCI-FI FAN.. YOU SHOULD LOVE THIS MOVIE. I DID! I would own it and watch it again and recommend to friends and family.
The film may as well be titled "Stephenie Meyer's Waiting Around."
