Extremely silly comedy about a self-indulgent private investigator who winds up on a cruise ship full of rich patrons, gorgeous women, murderous terrorists, and scarce food.
Follows the antics of private eye Ryu Saeba. While searching for the runaway daughter of a publishing tycoon, Ryu by coincidence ends up on a cruise ship hijacked by ruthless American criminals to take the passengers hostage. Assisted by his jealous female assistant, the runaway, two female undercover cops, and a male gambler, Ryu must foil the nefarious plot. Combines broad humor focusing on Ryu's lechery and hunger with action sequences.
Jackie Chan plays a womanizing private eye known as City Hunter in this Wong Jing directed movie. The movie is played for surreal laughs part of the time. But with Wong Jing at the helm of this comic strip of a movie, that is no surprise. When you watch this movie, you realize that Jackie Chan knows how to pick stories and direct himself better than anyone else.
I saw this movie on the Media Arts DVD released in April, 1999. The Japanese manufactured DVD has subtitles in 8 languages, including English and Spanish. The aspect ratio is 2.35 and the image quality is very fine.
This is the first Jackie Chan movie I've seen that wasn't in English and I'm glad I went out on a limb to watch it. I think its the funniest Chan film I've seen. I was also delighted that not every action (may as well say 'fight') scene didn't feature Chan versus one or more baddies. Instead it wasn't uncommon to see another good character fighting baddies, and often it was a female character, just to show they can fight just as good as blokes. Like I said it was really funny. In particular I liked the Street Fighter fight scene and the way it satirised very similar kung-fu type movies (which I'm sure Chan has had his share of). The plot was pretty run-of-the-mill but you really don't want a complex plot when the attraction is the action and comedy. It's also good when the two get combined (like in the Street Fighter scene). The ship setting proved a good place for many interesting fights, which allowed for great use of the environment when fighting (a trademark I love about Chan films).
Basically there's only one huge difference: tha Japanese version features a prolonged credits sequence with many more scenes from the City Hunter manga. Besides there are also two scenes with alternative footage involving a clock and a camera. 7cb1d79195
