11 Mar 2015 I'm loving Android but the photography community is pretty lacking compared to the Windows Phone community and waiting for the Camera2 API to be implemented is I know HTC's manual mode on the One M8 offers manual focus and shutter speed up to 4 seconds even without the Lollipop update.

There were a couple out there that claimed to have manual focus but basically just did what you described as "assisted auto focus." I found this thread at XDA where some people have been looking through the code to find a way to add the manual focus
