A young girl requests the help of a vampire hunter to kill the vampire who has bitten her, and thus prevent her from becoming a vampire herself.
It is the distant future, Supernatural creatures are controlling the small civilizations left on Earth. A beautiful young woman, Doris, has been bitten by Count Magnus Lee for trespassing in his domain while hunting for demons threatening her home. Fearing that her life will be controlled by the Count, Doris hires and offers herself to a man known only as "D", a vampire hunter with a dark past, to hunt down and destroy the Count, end his thirst, and save Doris from a life of eternal damnation.
Before I start, I am a "Bloodlust" fan boy. I think Bloodlust surpasses this in every aspect. Now that I have that sorted.
This anime was loosely adapted from Hideyuki Kikuichi's original Vampire Hunter D book. The end result was not in Kikuichi's favour. In spite of that, its still worth watching.
The animation is ugly, even for its time but most people can buy into that but if you can't than I don't suggest it.
The main reason to get this is because its action-oriented. If you want to see animated people being sliced in half, stabbed, shot, bitten etc. than this is the movie for you. Whilst the plot may be lacking I didn't find myself bored either. Think of this film as one of those sorts of films.
As far as accuracy towards the book goes, I've read the book and this IS awfully adapted but as I said before, its pure entertainment.
Overall this might not come off as a favourable review but the only reason to watch this is to be entertained. Nothing more, nothing less.
This dark anime is set in the much distant future where vampires and werewolves and other supernatural creatures intermingle the earth with humans. The story centers around Doris Rumm, and a vampire hunter named "D". Count Magnus Lee is a 5,000 year old vampire who has his heart set on marrying Doris. "D" is begged by Doris to protect her. He does so, and ends up battling with mystical beasts, soul sucking snake sisters, and some of Count Lee's offspring.
What I liked about it: Considering this was done in 1985, it was a groundbreaking film. The dark themes and creatures were something new to Japanese audiences. I liked the darkness, and I liked the action sequences. I liked the main character "D", who spoke sparingly, had a talking right hand that spewed forth insults and magical spells, and who was not invincible. This movie obviously inspired later animes and films such as "Blade".
What I didn't like: Doris was way too whiny and mushy. The supposed love story made me queasy. It did not fit in this movie.
All-in-all, I sort of enjoyed this movie. I mostly enjoyed watching the main character, "D". I liked the character design and his talking hand. I liked the subtleness of his personality.
