Five friends separated by working life are reluctantly reunited by their teenage leader (the childish Gary King) in an attempt to finish an incomplete pub crawl from their youth. Only to find out that the town has been replaced by robots who are the only thing standing in their way to reach The World's End.
In order to finish their epic pub crawl from 20 years ago, four friends are reunited by Gary King who is determined to get to The World's End but they have to go through pubs such as, The First Post, The Old Familiar, The Famous Cock, The Cross Hands, The Good Companions, The Trusty Servant, The Two-Headed Dog, The Mermaid, The Beehive, The King's Head and The Hole in the Wall. But, knowing that nobody recognizes them, they finally figure out that Newton Haven has been replaced by robots which is the only thing standing in their way of finishing The Golden Mile.
The much loved Cornetto trilogy comes to an end with "The World's End" which is perhaps not the best of the three, but definitely a good film when viewed in isolation. The cast now includes Martin Freeman (who's suddenly popping up everywhere), Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan which makes for a jolly group and the chemistry seems natural.
Edgar Wright's films often mold the world to cater to the lead character's idiosyncrasies and not the other way around, and this involves bizzaro trips involving aliens, zombies and murderous cults. The world of "The World's End" gives a meaning and purpose to Simon Pegg's character "Gary King" who's still stuck in his adolescent phase and all the wanton exuberance that comes with it, unlike the rest of his mates who have grown up, but still look back to their days of youth fondly. Hackneyed premise, but not overly so.
The film never gets the laughs "Shaun of the Dead" did, nor is it particularly memorable. But what you get is an evenly amusing affair, with some really well-choreographed fight sequences and clever dialogue. A decent finale to a great trilogy. 7/10
This film tells the story of an alcoholic man, who brings his four friends to redo and finish up the bar crawl they did not finish twenty years before.
"The World's End" is funny and entertaining, just like the other Simon Pegg films! The first 30 minutes of the film is all about drinking beer, and the world seems ordinary. After that, robots with blue blood are unleashed, and the entertainment begins. I find it almost ironic that the robots have blue blood - as if they are superior in the literal sense. The plot is funny, and is presented in a lighthearted manner, even though it is quite violent (but not scary). There are so many really funny lines that got me laughing, such as Dr Ink and many other clever lines. It's such a fun film to watch!
While things get a tad buckled town in mayhem and special effects throughout the film’s busy final reels, Wright spends enough time sketching out his mischievous middle-aged men so that their journey...feels worthwhile and even meaningful for a few of them.
