An ex-mercenary is forced out of isolation when three mysterious men kidnap and brainwash the city's children afflicted with the Geostigma disease.
Two years after the events in "Final Fantasy VII", a disease called 'Seikon-Shoukougun', or 'Geostigma', is spreading through the planet. This disease is believed to have been caused by the body fighting off foreign material that invaded the body two years earlier, at the end of "Final Fantasy VII". Guilt-ridden and haunted by his past, ex-SOLDIER Cloud Strife has decided to live a secluded, solitary life away from his friends while maintaining "Strife's Delivery Service", whose headquarters is located in Tifa Lockheart's bar, the Seventh Heaven. Tifa's bar serves as an orphanage for children stricken with Geostigma. Here, Tifa keeps an eye on Barret's six-year-old daughter, Marlene, while Barret searches the planet for an alternative energy source to the Planet's energy, Mako. One day, Cloud receives a phone call from the former Shinra, Inc. president, Rufus, asking him for protection from a mysterious man named Kadaj. Kadaj, in the meantime, along with his brothers Loz and Yazoo, are searching for their "mother", and seem to believe that Cloud knows where to find her. Meanwhile, Vincent Valentine has been wandering the planet gathering information on Kadaj's scheme, and Cloud and his friends must come together again to fight these new enemies.
I thoroughly enjoyed Final Fantasy: Spirits Within and looked forward to settling down to this one with my children. Whilst the CGI animation is something above average I am afraid it is not enough to carry what can only be described as a "fans only" film. Those of us who do not play Final Fantasy or have any interest in or knowledge of it are well advised to stay clear of this mess.
I noted in the "trivia" that the directors had never produced a film before and decided to use their experience from producing vignettes within video games - and this shows. The narrative is confused at times, the characters shallow and "devices" used in clumsy ways that perhaps may sense whilst exploring a game, but not as part of a film plot.
Throughout characters come and go who are perhaps well known to the gamers, but for the rest of us there's no rhyme or reason as to who they are, how they know the characters they interact with or why they are there. Indeed there are times when it feels as if the directors have left entire tracts of the film on the cutting room floor.
In short - a mess with no redeeming qualities that may entertain fans of the game, but won't engage or interest the rest of us.
I've just finished watching the FF7 movie, its been out about a week in the UK and despite having money to go and buy it, i couldn't help but plunge into my overdraft to watch something as a continuation to the game which at 15 i got so so involved in.
I agree with the majority of people reviewing the game, in that i don't think there's too much value in watching the film, if you haven't been immersed in the game. This is one of the things that i don't think anyone can say for sure unless they get a sci-fi fan but non FF7 player (do they exist?) to watch the movie and get their view.
From beginning to end the animation is stunning, and in true square-enix style; never stops wowing. If you've played FFX or any good PS2 game you know that these sort of graphics are a step up from the already amazing FMV scenes in these games. I think they gave themselves a lot to do in making the characters in FF7 stand out with such good digital form, how they achieved this is amazing and you can tell the graphics Dept worked forever in getting the finishing touches just right.
The music again was something of welcome nostalgia, if you got really into the game then i think the music is well suited to the scenes they are matched to, some it in the game was a little tedious, i remember thinking at the time 'i hope no-one can hear this' but i feel they've strayed away from the sometimes OTT choice of light hearted sounds in the game.
The storyline is where most of the reviews go on a limb, its so core to the game that people who didn't go for the main character so much (like tidus for me in FF10) perhaps wont enjoy this as much. A lot on the continuity problems are explained in such a subtle way in the movie (like why could is depressed despite finishing on a high in the game). its hard to pick up. Cloud is a complicated character of which only the main events of the story apply to (relationship to areith, seporoth, zack - being infused with mako and having a more then familiar link to the 'bad guys') it couldn't have hurt to put the other characters in a little more but i think the balance doesn't hurt the movie too much. There's loads of fight scenes and it did feel at times like there was no depth in the story but as someone mentioned in these reviews; this is hard work for square enix who are trying not to bore people who have played the game, and at the same time, give insight to into the original plot/characters to those who haven't. Thats where i think it is more fan based, i guess they had to make a choice between the two at some point.
All in all i thought it was a great film, some films are so eagerly awaited (like this one) but don't deliver, mainly because the development team know that people will go out and buy it because of the previous effort. (did someone say matrix 3?) but this is not the case with this film, they've stayed true to the fans and like me i know loads of people who brought this film on the basis of the game; none of which have been disappointed!
Over 25 minutes of new plot scenes have been added the complete version as well as a lot of remastered scenes. Most of the new material are plot scenes and so far some new action scenes. It has something to do with a mistranslation in the game; Aerith is actually the correct translation of the name. I think it's because that a "th" in Japanese is similar to an "s" and the name in Japanese is "Earisu" so it's one of the few translation mistakes the English versions of the games have. She is called "Aerith" in all future Final Fantasy VII projects.
Also, Aerith was the original name because it is close to the word "earth."
If you watch the summary feature on the DVD with the subtitles, her name is given as "Aerith" also. Most of them are; Steve Burton and Christy Carlson Romano both play Cloud and Yuffie. Cid is not given a voice in KH1 but Chris Edgerley voices him in KH2. Also, Mandy Moore does not play Aerith in this, instead it's Mena Suvari who has the role in KH2. Lance Bass doesn't voice Sephiroth like he did in KH1, but rather it's George Newbern (a.k.a. Nooj in X-2), whom also voices him in KH2. Rachel Leigh Cook plays Tifa in this and KH2. No, despite rumours of this being the case. No, it is a sequel set two years after the game, except for the opening sequence with Red XIII which takes place 500 years after the gameShe is but mostly in dream sequences with Cloud but she is seen at the very end of the movie a5c7b9f00b
