Book descriptionA really good account of American Classical Music. You can tell while reading the types of music Gann has an affinity for (minimalism and its offshoots and Cage and his followers) and, even before minimalism is mentioned, the constant references to it can be a little annoying. All-in-all, though, the book does a good job of covering a LOT of composers and different genres of modern/contemporary classical.The one odd part of the book, for me, was its final section where Gann starts discussing the future, of American Classical Music. These sections in books are always tricky, as predicting what will happen in a future where classical music seems to be in dire straights can lead to what appears to be extreme pessimism or unrealistic optimism (or both). Gann, however, seems to take the decline of European-style Symphony Orchestras as a GOOD thing , as it allows American composers to free themselves from European influences. While he does take into account the negative effects a loss of European-style musical systems would have on American composers, he seems to almost gloss over them and not take them FULLY into account.All-in-all, though, the book was a very good history of American classical music and, in conjunction with Alex Ross The Rest is Noise, offers a great variety of composers and works.American Music in the Twentieth Century by Kyle Gann read thepiratebay eReader sale book
