28 Jun 2015 Lay out the eye, then get the middle strand and put it under another going AGAINST the braid. Make sure you give the strand a good twist once it is through. This will make for a neater splice. Pull it tight.
Give each strand a total of six tucks. Once all of the tucks are completed, place the splice on the floor and roll it back and forth under your foot to smooth it. Then loop the eye over something and put a strain on the line. Cut off the projecting "tails' of the strands and the splice is finished.
Step #1 – To begin this splice, measure 14 crowns (or twists) from the end of the line [18 crowns for a tapered splice]. Mark this location with a temporary wrap of tape around the rope. Un-lay the rope up to the tape. Heat seal or tape the end of each individual working strands. (note: be careful that the strands do not untwist).

Measure the length to be unraveled and secure the rope at that length with tape or twine. The correct length to unravel is about 3 times the diameter per "tuck", i.e., for five tucks in half inch diameter rope, leave the free strands at least 7.5 inches long; and for seven tucks at least 10.5 inches. Remove the tape, then tighten if necessary by pulling on the strand ends. Continue tucking the taped strands down the body of the rope. A tuck consists of skipping over the strand below and tucking under the next 1. When all 3 strands are tucked in this manner, 1 round of tucks is complete.
A splice is a way of terminating a rope or joining two ends of rope together without using a knot. Apart from being bulky and unsightly, even a correctly tied knot can cause significant loss of strength to a rope.
