I do not consider them forge numbers meaningless. They mean SA all the way. I have a 1.5mil SA restored and managed to find a bullet guide the was forged A 43. Everyone here has things that they prefer in their M1's (MTC29 is a HRA man), I myself prefer the numbered SA parts on my WW2 garands.

I notice The best guess I ever read was as a way to identify them vs the older bullet guides. I wanted a 308 Garand as close to a 'new' rifle as possible.
4 The bullet guide is a very important and often overlooked part on the M1 Garand. Having nothing to do with guiding bullets, this part sets the timing for releasing the op-rod catch when a clip is inserted. The bullet guide also acts as a strength member for the receiver legs. Two versions of this part have been produced.
