Years after the Black Mesa Incident (from the original Half Life game), the mysterious G-Man summons Gordon Freeman from his induced slumber. Placing him on a train, Gordon finds himself in "City 17", one of an unknown number of 'urban centers,' where humans are kept in an Orwellian pseudo-slavery by a mysterious alien race known as the Combine. City 17, possibly located in eastern Europe, is overseen by Dr. Breen, a former administrator of Black Mesa who, after arranging the surrender of Earth to the Combine, was rewarded with a leadership position. Humans are now half-way oppressed by themselves. Prisons, concentration camps and urban centers alike are controlled by the Combine Overwatch, members of a somewhat voluntary military in which participation is rewarded with various benefits such as with better living conditions. People are also attracted to it because they would like to feel like being part of something greater then themselves, and also because they can get away with physically abusing, tormenting, and killing the civilians. A resistance stirs in the shadows... a large system of underground railroads are in place. The populace is on the edge of total rebellion. What they need is a little inspiration, and a little push, and Gordon Freeman may be just the man to provide it...
After previously causing portals to open between worlds, Gordon released a race of aliens from enslavement on Xen and was placed into stasis by a mysterious figure known only as the G-Man. Meanwhile a race of aliens known as the combine enslaved Earth and is devouring its resources. Freeman awakens on a train heading for a massive city known only as City 17. The alien Combine empire watches over its human minions from a massive fortress called the Citadel, within which the human governor is none other than Gordon Freeman's old administrator, Dr. Wallace Breen. Uniting with the resistance fighters which contain some of his old acquaintances from the Black Mesa research facility (such as Barney Calhoun from Half-Life: Blue Shift), Gordon leads the resistance to free mankind with the help of the creatures he liberated from Xen, and the Antlion controlled with pheromones. After the fall of the first fortress G-Man places Gordon back into stasis.
This truly is the best game ever made.
First of all, for it's time it had AMAZING graphics, and the Source engine is still powerful enough to have the same graphics as all new next-gen games! The audio is great, the story is great, the gameplay is great, the dialouges are great, everything is GREAT!
The first scene in Half Life 2 is truly a great time in gaming history. You can feel the atmosphere of terror, fear and corruption as you exit the train and enters City 17.
From the very beginning to the last seconds of the game you will hopefully enjoy playing it as much as i did.
If you love First Person Shooters, you will love Half Life 2.
Half-Life 2 took way too long to complete but in the end it was more than worth the wait.. the single player game is intense and fast paced action with great audio. the music picks up at more intense times and uses sound bites at appropriate times which makes the game feel more like you're in a movie. a lot of people complain that the end made it seem too short and i can understand why some people were let down by such a calm and mellow ending after such an intense climactic experience. if the game ended with a "you win" cut scene maybe people would have a different opinion but there are NO cut scenes in the game. all scenes of dialogue and major events are fully interactive. the single player alone is enough to satisfy but the free Source engine has opened up endless replay value for the game with so many mods already out and still coming out. Counter-Strike: Source is a great remake of the original which i wasted most of high-school playing. Half-Life 2 Deathmatch is the online version of the single player which gives all players the gravity gun as well as all the other single player weapons and more. its a great way to hone your abilities and the grav gun is always entertaining. HL2:DM has hundreds of custom maps created by the players as well as dozens made by the production company them self. Day Of Defeat: Source is the new version of the original Half Life 1 mod but uses the new Source engine and the new High-Definition Range Rendering tech to give lighting a more realistic look. these are just the official mods for the game, there are hundreds already out and hundreds more still in production. if you're looking for a game with endless replay value then this is the game for you.
