Runyonesque Broadway gamblers turn patriotic when they stumble onto a cell of Nazi saboteurs.
Broadway gambler Gloves Donahue wants to find who killed the baker of his favorite cheesecake. He sees nightclub singer Leda Hamilton leaving the bakery. When her boss Marty's partner Joe is murdered, Leda and her accompanist Pepi disappear. It turns out that beneath all the mystery is a gang of Nazi operatives planning to blow up a battleship in New York harbor.
This is a comical crime story directed by Vincent Sherman. The black & white atmosphere of a gangster film prevails. Humphrey Bogart plays a gambler/wise guy that gathers some muscle from a gang of 'enforcers' to take on the local branch of the Third Reich. Bogart is upset about the murder of the baker of his favorite cheesecake. The wise guys end up making a shambles of a Nazi spy ring. Comedy bits filter the fisticuffs.
Star studded cast helping Bogart includes: Peter Lorre, William Demarest, Jane Darwell, Jackie Gleason, Phil Silvers, Wallace Ford and Judith Anderson. Conrad Veidt is outstanding as the Nazi ring leader.
You gotta' see this one to believe it! I love every actor in this film but boy, did I hate the movie. A previous reviewer said it reminded him of the Bowery Boys and that pretty much hit the nail on the head. I was actually uncomfortable for the cast while I watched this....surely they knew that this was beneath them when they were spouting some of that dialogue! You can't go wrong with Bogart, Lorre, Veidt, Dame Judith Anderson et al.....or can you? The plot, which has Bogey and the boys chasing a group of Nazis around New York, probably isn't too bad but it is the forced and juvenile humor that sticks in your craw. It is hard to watch Bogart in this kind of role and it is not because we always expect him to be a hard-ass but because he just is not very adept at "comedy". There are some fine dramatic actors in this film, along with some light comedy players but never the twain shall meet....they just don't mix very well. However, Dame Judith Anderson looked rather sexy in her part especially in the black sequins. She never got much of a chance to play that kind of part. As usual, Peter Lorre was terrific, as was Conrad Veidt, the consummate Nazi. What an elegant actor he was. He died in 1943 at the age of 50. Thank heavens for his Major Strasser in "Casablanca". I would hate to think that this film was his American legacy. So, if you like the Bowery Boys, then you will like this one. I thought it was a waste of time but that is just my opinion. Give it a try and decide for yourself.
