An undercover Detroit cop navigates a dangerous neighborhood that's surrounded by a containment wall with the help of an ex-con in order to bring down a crime lord and his plot to devastate the entire city.
There's not much to say about the story. It's because the movie stayed very true to its root of B13 and unfortunately didn't try to make any creative major addition or substitution. Being a remake, the story is quite literally the same as Banlieue 13. It can be said that Brick Mansions is B13 itself in America, It feels very much like that. Many of the memorable details are kept from the original B13, even to the 'K2 handwriting' on the beginning. Yet the blood, gore and brutality is somewhat reduced from what's in the French movie.
Seeing the last completed act by Paul Walker doesn't disappoint. Paul did a good job here. He was able to balance the parkour of David Belle with his own raw-looking action. Too bad that the movie doesn't offer anything new compared to the original.
It's good to see David Belle acted and did what he does best again. Though the difference in age of B13's Belle and Brick Mansions' Belle sure does show up greatly on the closeups and head-shot angles, in the form of face wrinkles.
The action in the starting action sequence is quite of the same ordering as in B13, though there is small additions. The nice thing thing to see about this remake, in comparison to the original Luc Besson and Piere Morel's work, is that now Damien, played by Paul Walker, is not so much of a martial artist. So here the fights are more raw than the more artistically choreographed action in B13.
It's kind of strange to see that the music is also of the same characteristics of the original B13, though it's of a different language. But like the original B13, the rap music lifts up the mood well and suitable to the scenes mood.
One thing I noticed odd about this movie is that, from one point of view, this movie should have hinted about Paul Walker's death. Being more of a parkour and fighting action movie, yet here Paul drives and crashes while on high speed, twice.
Finally my verdict is hat Brick Mansions (2014) quite deserves a 7 out of 10 score for a remake. It owes most of the score to Pau Walker's originality and his legacy as his last complete film work. A recommendation is a yes from me.
I saw "Brick Mansions", starring Paul Walker-The Fast & Furious movies, Flags of Our Fathers; David Belle-The Family, Babylon A.D., and FYI, he is French and the founder of Parkour, which he uses extensively in the movie; RZA-The Man With the Iron Fists, Ghost Dog:The Way of the Samurai and Catalina Denis-a Columbian actress that was in Sleepless Night, Taxi 4.
This is an action movie that is based on a French film called District B13, which also had David in it, playing the same part that he plays here. This is also Paul's last fully completed performance in a movie-he was working on Fast & Furious 7 when he died in a car crash in November of 2013. Luc Besson-The Taken & the Transporter movies-is the writer. Anyway, Paul plays a policeman in Detroit in the not-too-distant future of 2018, where a bad part of town called Brick Mansions is sealed off from the rest of the city by a containment wall-sort of like in Escape From New York. It's to keep all the crime elements inside, away from the descent people living in Detroit. RZA plays a drug lord/crime boss that runs things in Brick Mansions and gets real dangerous when he gets his hands on a Neutron bomb. David plays a local resident in Brick Mansions that does not like RZA selling drugs in his neighborhood so he does a hit and run number on him-he steals the drugs from RZA and destroys them-using his Parkour to stay one step ahead of them. Catalina plays the girlfriend-that-gets-captured-and-used-against-the-hero part pretty well. There is not much new here, as far as the plot goes, but there are lots of car chases, lots of gun battles and lots of fantastic looking Parkour to keep you occupied for an hour and a half , so I enjoyed it. It's rated "PG-13" for violence, language and drug content and has a running time of 1 hour & 30 minutes. It's a nice little action movie and I would buy it on Blu-Ray.
Mansions is like “Vehicle 19″ or “Takers," dumb, noisy junk.
Both versions differ severely. For instance, the Extended Cut contains an entirely new soundtrack, David Belle has a different voice - at least that is the case in the English audio track - but he always has a French accent. A lot of the single scenes are recut and often have an alternate order. Some story details are altered, as well. And of course, violence is added to the Extended Cut which was probably removed from the Theatrical Version in order to get the PG-13 rating. a5c7b9f00b
