I suggest always shooting in full manual mode which as a new DSLR Video shooter you may find intimidating but it's such a better way to shoot and learn. Oh, the other thing I would add is to make sure you have set up your camera to give you the best shot at a "film look" - there are tons of tutorials online

how do you lock the shutter speed? if you're in manual mode or shutter priority mode, you can dial it in with the dial wheel above the Rec button. if you're in Aperture mode, you can dial in your aperture on the wheel, point the cam at the lit scene, wait for the shutter rate to auto adjust itself to your liking, and
