The Seeing Eye Dog breeding program is considered one of the most important processes of successfully producing high quality, healthy and intelligent working dogs. With genetically sound and proven breeding dogs, everything that follows (puppy production and dog training) is built upon a solid foundation.
Crucial to the success of any breeding programme is the quality of the stock brought in to replace stock that retire or are removed. It is Guide Dogs' aim to ensure the selection process is rigorous and comprehensive, so that only the very best dogs are added to the programme, in terms of both health and temperament.
Each year, guide dog schools—independent nonprofit organizations that provide guide dogs for blind and visually impaired individuals—breed close to 3000 dogs. When so many intelligent, loving shelter dogs are in need of homes, why don't guide dog schools rescue dogs like some of the other service-dog programs?
