24 Aug 2016 It has a Sentencing Council that is responsible for producing, issuing, and reviewing guidance to the courts on what factors should be considered when amongst the public regarding the realities of sentencing and publishing information regarding sentencing practice in Magistrates' and the Crown Court.
Publication — Definitive guideline — 7 March 2017. This guideline applies regardless of the date of the offence to all individual offenders aged 18 and older and to organisations in cases where the first hearing is on or after 1 June 2017. The guideline applies equally in magistrates' courts and the Crown Court.

Sentencing guidelines are available for most of the significant offences sentenced in the magistrates' court and for a wide range of offences in the Crown Court. There is also guidance on general sentencing issues and principles. These guidelines are not specific to individual offences.

Sentencing Council - new definitive guideline on drug offences. This guideline on drug offences applies to all offenders aged 18 and over regardless of the date of their offence and comes into effect from 27 February 2012. This replaces the guidelines for the above offences in the Magistrates' Court Sentencing Guidelines,
for England and Wales promotes greater consistency in sentencing, whilst maintaining the independence of the judiciary. 10 Dec 2015 The Sentencing Council has published a revised definitive guideline for allocation, which will provide courts with guidance on whether cases should be dealt with in magistrates' courts or the Crown Court. This will enable them to ensure that cases are tried and sentenced at the appropriate level.
