Four gunmen plan to rob a train, not only of its cargo, such as money, but the valuables on the possession of the passengers. They are not averse to shooting to kill anyone who is out of line, which includes anyone not listening to their instructions. To pull off their plan, they have to subdue the manager of the station where they plan to board the train, board without anyone noticing that they are doing so, subdue anyone guarding the cargo, and take over the engine so that they stop the train to corral the passengers in one area while they are being robbed, and then make their getaway. Even if they are able to get to this stage, they may have to deal with those who now know what they've done, a posse which very well may be on its way.
A group of bandits stage a brazen train hold-up, only to find a determined posse hot on their heels.
When you think of pioneering works in the motion picture industry, there are three: Lumiere's brief film clips that were the first ever shown to the public...Edwin S. Porter's The Great Train Robbery, the first true narrative melodrama....and The Birth of a Nation, the first true feature film (though controversial now).
Broncho Billy was also the first true movie "star"...making this film all the more a milestone.
I watched this movie a while ago. I thought that it was very interesting because it has such a remarkable history behind it. Back in the time of Edison Manufacturing Company, the films that it made such as The Great Train Robbery and 1910's Frankenstein were probably considered scary. It's hard to believe now, but both of those are still good to watch in my opinion because they kind of started the western and horror film genre. I find it very interesting to watch the old Edison Company films just to see how motion pictures started.
In short, even though this was made in 1903 and is only about 10 or 15 minutes long, it's worth watching at least once.
