MI6's top assassin (Mark Strong) has a brother. Unfortunately for him, he's a football hooligan (Sacha Baron Cohen) from the town of Grimsby. Nobby has everything a man from the poor English fishing town of Grimsby could want - 9 children and the most attractive girlfriend in northern England (Rebel Wilson). There's only one thing missing in his life: his little brother, Sebastian. After they were adopted by different families as children, Nobby spent 28 years searching for him. Upon hearing of his location, Nobby sets off to reunite with his brother, unaware that not only is his brother an MI6 agent, but he's just uncovered a plot that puts the world in danger. On the run and wrongfully accused, Sebastian realizes that if he is going to save the world, he will need the help of its biggest idiot.
A new assignment forces a top spy to team up with his football hooligan brother.
I've never been a fan of SBC. I watched this without knowing he was involved or one of the main actors. And I have to admit, I had some tears streaming down my face due to some of the gags. Really some funny moments.
Yes, the story is the strongest, but it never tries to be serious. It actually tells the tale of the strength of family, friends and loyalty. It was nice to see South Africa featuring a bit as well (I'm from there), but I was sad to see that they brought in an American actress to play the maid. I guess they have to play some bigger names. Both brothers were portrayed well and the dynamics between were great.
The wife's probably going to hate it, but I'm going to tell her to watch it anyway. She'll have a few good (and unbelieving) laughs as well.
I have to confess to not knowing a great deal about Sacha Baron Cohen. This film was, then, my first real exposure to a comedy with Cohen in the lead and I have to confess, I did not laugh once.
Its clear Cohen has great ability as a character actor.His Nobby Butcher characterization is, in its own way, quite clever. Its a shame then the script for this film did not follow the same path. What you get instead, in my opinion, are rather spiteful, stereotypical depictions of working class Brits, as low brow, social welfare sponging, free loaders. This is married up to what I consider some of the clumsiest, utterly unfunny attempts at ribald humour I have seen, in a long, long time. Think Benny Hill style humour with a lobotomy and you are there.
I can but hope other works with Cohen in the lead are more amusing. That said, after this outing I'm playing it safe. I'll be sticking to Peter Sellers and Rowan Atkinson, thank you very much. Two out of ten from me.
Grimsby fails in its satirical mission due to a hodgepodge of generic action and ill-advised comedy.
