Okay, I like Batman: The Killing Joke it does kind of let you in with an insight in the ideology of The Joker and the story being solely about trying to win by the book as a way to say The Joker isn't right about what he's talking about. It's a great story, my only problem with it being that it's too short, taking less than an hour to read in full. The idea of making a movie with Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill in their respective roles would have been great... It isn't, I do think padding out the story would have been a way to go but when looking at how they did it... No, simply no. They pad it out with establishing who Batgirl is before she gets crippled by The Joker but they do it to establish her as being whiny with scenes talking about how Batman is holding her back and talking in the library with a gay stereotype, and also they try to push that the reason Batman goes to Arkham Asylum to try and talk to The Joker in a way to make peace with him (mainly because he knows in the end one will kill the other) is because they try to parallel it with Batgirl's last case when a sociopath mob boss takes a liking to Batgirl, it isn't a bad idea but the way they execute it is just awful. It's actually sad because once it does adapt the comic (aside from the animation being worse than the comic book artwork) it's a very faithful adaption and it gets really good, Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy deliver pitch perfect performances as Batman and The Joker and the only real padding being a bunch of scenes where Batman tries looking for The Joker and even then they're good! I have almost no complaints with the second half of the movie. It's just a shame then that the first half really drags, the only reason I kept watching after a while is just out of hope that it eventually bears some resemblance to the comic. In all seriousness, just skip the first 40 minutes - it's clear that the first half and second half are written by 2 separate people with varying degrees of talent.
If you're a fan of the other Batman movies, give it a watch. It's dark, depressing, and moody – and (perhaps purposefully) unsatisfying. Conroy, Hamill and Tara Strong are great as always. The animations looked a little stiff sometimes, but usually as good as Under the Red Hood. Good direction and decent music.
But the writing. Oh, man. It didn't really hit me until I had reached the ending (SPOILERS follow). Usually the "bad guy" tries to decrease the height of his crimes by pointing out similarities between himself and the "good guy." Instead Batman is the one saying that he and the Joker are very alike. Joker gets the tired line, "It's too late to help me," while sounding all too sane. He tells a joke, and they laugh like two old friends. Batman not wanting to give a "moral high ground" speech was strange. The fact that he laughed was stranger. Is Bruce beginning to go insane? The ending scenes would have been amazing in that case, but it's never established or built up. The one-night- stand with Barbara could even have played into that (I always thought they "did it" anyway, so I wasn't surprised by it). Would it have been THAT hard to play up a Batgirl v. Joker vendetta in the beginning, instead of using a throwaway gangster character as a vehicle for Batgirl angst?
Average movie that never earns the empathy it demands. 5/10
