The evil warlord General M. Bison and his troops have kidnapped Allied Nations relief workers along with three U.N soldiers that were assigned to protect them. M. Bison demands that the United Nations pay him ransom money in exchange for the hostages, where M. Bison has given the United Nations 3 days and he threatens to kill the hostages if the United Nations fails to pay the ransom. Learning his best friend, Carlos "Charlie" Blanka is one of the hostages, U.N military commanding officer Colonel William F. Guile leads his army of troops against M. Bison. But Guile isn't the only man after M. Bison. Guile sends low-life martial artists Ryu and Ken Masters to infiltrate M. Bilson's one-eyed arms dealer Victor Sagat and his masked Spanish cage fighter Vega and discover the location of M. Bison's jungle fortress. News journalist Chun-Li Zang and her crew, former boxer Balrog and former sumo-wrestler Edmond Honda are out to settle their scores with M. Bison. M. Bison's unwilling chief scientist Dr. Dhalsim is transforming Blanka into a genetic mutated super soldier, in M. Bison's goal for world domination. Joined by martial artists and fighters from around the world, Guile and his troops engage in combat as they set out to defeat the evil warlord and rescue the hostages from his jungle fortress, before the 72 hours up, as Guile and M. Bison faces off in the ultimate showdown.
Col. Guile and various other martial arts heroes fight against the tyranny of Dictator M. Bison and his cohorts.
I'm going to cut this film some slack. Movies based on comic books and video games have high expectations to live up to and are open targets for criticism.
CAST: There are some recognizable faces in Street Fighter like Jean Claude Van Damme, Miguel Nunez, and Raul Julia. I thought this movie was cast greatly because the actors resemble the video game characters. There are complaints about Van Damme as Guile, seeing as he has an accent and hes not American but physically he was a good choice.
Story: They'll be no tournaments or fighting on the streets. The story is basically Bison keeping hostages for ransom.
Most of the characters seem thrown in. Anyway, T Hawk and Cammy are Guiles assistants in the army. E Honda, Chun Li and that boxer(forgot his name) work in television/media. DeeJay and Zangeif are Bisons right hand men. Vegas a prize fighter. Ken, Ryu and Sagat had there own stories but got mixed up in the main story.
It sucks that Blanka and Dhaslim were poorly represented. Blanka was an experiment gone wrong with no fight scenes. Dhaslim was a scientist and was nothing like a witch doctor. Thats OK though because they're were so many characters you cant heavily focus on all of them.
The only thing that always ruined this film for me is the lack of action. Especially with Van Damme you'd expect more action scenes. This movie mainly crams all the action in at the end. *Good note is Guile does that hurricane kick* The action scenes before the end are very brief and disappointing(like when Chun Li goes off on Bison). This movie puts the story ( a weak story at that) ahead of the action and most people prefer that. So its your call. As years passed I learned to appreciate the film for what it was.
Street Fighter is ideally a kids movie,but is watchable for adults and the "Die Hard" Van Damme fan.it's slightly thin on plot,but then again works surprisingly well for a video game tie-in.The cast see's Van Damme (Colonel Guile) teamed with aussie pop babe Kylie Minogue (Cammy) to take on the lunatic General M.Bison,and foil his twisted plans for world domination (Cough).The late Raul Julia portrays the madman convincingly,and puts in a steady performance throughout the film,proving "again" that he was worthy of better roles.overall,it's a fun flick that tries hard to please both youngsters and adults,well worth a look.
Due to the low rating the British BBFC 12 Version was censored in several action scenes: the breaking of bones is missing and some fighting moves as well. In a fight with a guard, bags of liquid marked "DNA mutagens use extreme caution" are accidentally spilled on him. a5c7b9f00b
