The cop test pilot for an experimental police helicopter learns the sinister implications of the new vehicle.
Blue Thunder is a specially modified helicopter. It is for police work, but is armed and designed to counter street insurgencies. Its makers want to show what it will do, but have to train Los Angeles Police pilot Frank Murphy to fly and use it in order to allow it to operate in the city. Murphy and the project pilot have differences going back to Vietnam. The conflict between them continues to heat up as Murphy begins to suspect that Blue Thunder is more than has been disclosed.
Recently remastered and fully loaded with non-stop action, the Special Edition of Blue Thunder, in widescreen, is just as explosive and thrilling as it was on the big screen back in 1983. 25 years after the Columbia Pictures release, Blue Thunder still has a message to send out to its audience on the political and social levels.
Not only is the commentary by director John Badham, editor Frank Morriss, and actor Roy Scheider really good, the various documentaries on the DVD are really excellent and informative. Plus, a few other surprises are also really entertaining.
If you're a fan of this classic action/thriller, be sure to check out the Special Edition. You won't be disappointed.

However with today's technology and killing prowess of the worlds' militaries the tech displayed in this movie is underwhelming. I remember watching this when it first came out when the helicopter seemed so futuristic. Now, not so much. It doesn't take away from the story line or the action. It's no Lethal Weapon but is definitely worth a watch.
The action sequences are what the film is all about, and these are remarkably well done, including a climactic, largely bloodless shootout among helicopters and jet fighters over Los Angeles.
The DVD version differs in one scene compared to the tape version. The VHS is identical to the laserdisc and earlier TV broadcasts. a5c7b9f00b
