It takes you out of the moment just long enough to be disappointing. Honestly? The gearbox is the most disappointing aspect of the BMW E46 M3. I didn't really like either the manual or SMG options, but I would say that if you're intending to drive this car hard - and you should - take the SMG and forgive its foibles at slow
26 Jun 2014 Yep, I said it. The e46 m3 you really want is the SMG. Blasphemy you say? Maybe. But all of you are missing out on fantastic vehicles because people with no experience with the system love to perpetuate the myth that the transmission murders puppies and gave your grandmother glaucoma. Ok, maybe
I have an opportunity to buy an E46 M3 with SMG for the right price. Is SMG really as bad a system as some claim? Some hate it, others love it. This would be a daily driver and get some track use. Thoughts? Thanks. Jump to top MFollower is offline
I'm about to buy an E46 M3 and i dunno what to go for, SmG or Manual ?? I have read reviews after review and they both seem to come out 50/50. I know an SmG can be very problematic ie Pumps going but i'm not to pushed about it as long as i get the most fun out of it. CAn any 1 advise me what to go for
We look over the pros and cons of E46 M3 ownership.
As far as off-track reliability goes, it is an additional system adding complexity to the car, but there are no concrete stats on SMG reliability vs. manual, especially since If the concept of driving around a car that might break and cost you $2,000 (or more) to fix is daunting, then I don't suggest *any* E46 M3.

The petrochemicals pumping through your veins predispose you to row a manual transmission, but the spouse sharing the car payment--or the clutch leg, charley-horsed in commuter traffic--argues otherwise. Your options? An inherently less-efficient automatic dressed up with manual shift buttons or a slightly jerky-shifting
