28 Mar 2009 I have a 2000 Forester with 5MT and approx. 140k. Some time back noticed transmisson getting noisy when clutch engaged. Noise pretty much goes away.
Subaru manual transmissions are pretty well built and have minimal problems. When failure occurs there are usually just a couple of things that fail. The most common problem is bearing failure causing the transmission to be noisy and if it's excessive your trans will sound as if someone has put rocks in it. The other failure

and here is the one that was making all the noise (i think top right) every single roller was out and lose in my assembly, jose found all 14 and put the new one in. the transmission sounds awsome, I can finally hear the straight cut gears without that annoying whiine/whir. BTW my center diff was in good
17 Feb 2010 I have a 2001 outback with a manual transmission. It has ~203000 miles on it. The transmissin makes a weird rough noise in all gears. I just replaced.

My WRX is a somewhat different setup but, Subaru being what they are, most of the equipment is very similar.
