I'm working on a large document which exceeded the memory capacity of TexLive 2011 so I tried to externalize the tikz images by using it's external library, as described in pgfmanual. I compiled using pdflatex -shell-escape foo.tex. which resulted in an error like this: ! Package tikz Error: Sorry, the system call 'pdflatex

The fact that you receive a complete test.pdf is caused by -interaction nonstopmode : it reports the error, but continues to process the document. In that case, the external library falls repeats the process as if it would not have attempted the externalization. To conclude: please repair any errors in your main document,
To be more precise: I moved usepackage{pdfpages} before the externalize call and configured includepdf as "remove away": documentclass{scrbook} usepackage{pgfplots} pgfplotsset{compat=1.8} usepgfplotslibrary[external] usepackage{pdfpages} tikzexternalize[shell escape=-enable-write18

26 May 2012 The error I receive is that lualatex has segfaulted during the convert-with-system-call, and PDF output has failed to generate. I should also note that, if I prepare trivial plots, I have no problem. I'm not sure that its practical to create a MWE for this problem, since to some extent, it depends on conflicts specific

I just found the answer to my question using this thread. While pdflatex including the option -shell-escape couldn't be found during former compilations, everything works fine now. Changing the folder for the commands to /Library/TeX/texbin/ and adding the same into the Build->Commands ($PATH) in the
