Swordsmen are better than spears. Spears are better than cavalry. This is the rock paper scissors than TW is usually based on. Rome 2 is a little more complex with pikes and shields and armour effects as well as the special units. But if you stick loosely to that guide you can pretty much figure it out yourself.
