Bruce Wayne a.k.a. Batman is in his 50's and has created the ultimate Batsuit but is no longer fully able to do the job so places the suit away and vows to never use it. Several years later and into the next century there's a new breed of criminal terrorizing Gotham City but Bruce has kept his vow. Terry McGinnis, a teenager whose father was killed because he was going to expose criminal activities at the company that he works for which just happens to be Wayne Enterprises. Terry comes across Bruce as he was being beaten by some thugs, he takes him to the mansion and he discovers the Batcave and the Batsuit; he takes the suit to get the people who killed his father. Afterwards Bruce decides to make him the new Batman and train him.
At least 40 years after the "current" adventures of Batman and 20 years after Bruce Wayne retired from the role, his secret is discovered by troubled teen Terry McGinnis. After McGinnis' father is murdered by the man who took over Bruce Wayne's company, McGinnis dons a high-tech Bat suit that Wayne last used, creating a new hero for a future Gotham.
I loved Batman: The Animated Series probably because it had more classic villains and memorable episodes. Batman will always be Bruce Wayne in my mind, but when Batman Beyond came on the air I wanted to be open to Terry McGuinness. The show was a little too "teen" which was unnecessary. I realize it was being more directed at kids but it seemed too forced. The show had a couple of good episodes; ones with the Royal Flush gang, Inque, etc. I've seen a good amount of them but I couldn't establish the same connection to this series that I did with Batman-TAS. I did like the way it explained more about Bruce Wayne, and that it wasn't completely about Terry. Batman's new toys were cool, but I wish the show was a little darker.
I haven't seen every episode of this series, but from what I saw it seems good to me. However, it could have been better than good, it could have been great if they didn't aim it at kids. Batman: Beyond would have made a great adult animated show because the future of most of the characters from Batman should be very dark. An adult aimed show would have been able to deal with the villains in ways that the show currently can't. Although the episode that was done dealing with what happened to Mr.Freeze remains my favorite to this day.
"Batman Beyond" takes place about 40 years after the "New Batman Adventures" series. At the time of the show's release a precise date was given as 2039. Meaning Bruce Wayne quit being Batman in 2019 (as seen in ''Rebirth''). This also means the episode, ''Epilogue'' takes place in the year 2054. a5c7b9f00b
