The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) has published clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and management of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs). Algorithm 1 divides SSTIs into 2 categories: purulent (abscess/furuncle/carbuncle) and nonpurulent (cellulitis/erysipelas/necrotizing fasciitis).
The focus of this guideline is the diagnosis and appropriate treatment of diverse SSTIs ranging from minor superficial infections to life-threatening infections such as necrotizing fasciitis. In addition, because of an increasing number of immunocompromised hosts worldwide, the guideline addresses the wide array of SSTIs

5 Jul 2017 In mild cases of cellulitis treated on an outpatient basis: Dicloxacillin, amoxicillin, or cephalexin. In patients who are allergic to penicillin: Clindamycin or a macrolide (clarithromycin or azithromycin) An initial dose of parenteral antibiotic with a long half-life (eg, ceftriaxone) followed by an oral agent.
