PART SEVEN
“Akanishi-kun?”
“Yep, I’m here.”
”Buda-san?”
”Yes.”
“Kamenashi-kun?”
”Uun.”
”Koyama-kun?”
”Right here.”
“Nakamaru-kun?”
No answer. Takama-sensei looked around the classroom.
“Where’s Nakamaru?” he asked.
“Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s with that Ueda”, Jin said to Kazuya in a loud whisper.
“Hey!” Ueda said from the desk behind him.
“Oh you’re there? Eeew, she’s just behind me!”
Laughter. Even Takama-sensei smiled… everyone did. Except for Junno of course, but nobody saw him anyway.
“But where is Maru?” Takama-sensei said again.
No answer. Not before…
“I can go look for him. I saw him earlier”, Junno mumbled.
“Ah, Taguchi-kun… alright… and… hurry!”
He didn’t have to say it twice, Junno was already gone. Actually he hadn’t seen Maru earlier, but he had a feeling of where he maybe could be… if he’d spoken to Ueda… and Ueda knew where Junno used to hide…
And he couldn’t bear the thought of what would happen to Maru if the other guys caught him first. He looked down under the stairs and nodded to himself. Yup, inside of there was a person.
“Heno heno, Maru-kun?” he said. “Lesson has started already.”
No answer.
“Maru-kun? Maru-kun? Are you… alive?” Junno got in under the stairs and poked him, whispering: “Maru?” in his ear.
Maru jumped and turned around against him with clenched fists.
“Don’t-“ he began, but Junno had already fallen backwards out of the shadows. “T-Taguchi? Oh, sorry, I thought…”
Junno wailed - his back hurt from the bad landing - but answered:
“You’re late for class; I said I could go look for you.”
“Very nice of you…”
“Yea it is, isn’t it? Now why… why are you hiding down here?” he asked, with just whispers so that nobody would hear. “Is… it about Akanishi, heeh?”
Maru sighed.
“You could say, I mean, he’s everywhere, isn’t he? Everything that happens on this place is just his fault in the end. And nobody seems to realize it. Especially not the teachers.”
“They’re afraid to lose their jobs.”
“Of course they are!” Maru said bitterly. “And the students… ah, how could I ever have been such a dumbhead, Taguchi-kun, can you tell me that?”
“Err… no…”
“I mean, you’ve always been the only one who hasn’t been listening at Jin, and everybody bullies you for it. Don’t look at me like that, I know they do. I’ve been one of them. But not anymore!” He gave a short laughter, without happiness. “And now I’ve seen stuff I can’t tell anybody, because if I do… if I do, then I’ll go get killed or something. It wouldn’t surprise me. And don’t ask me what I’ve seen ‘cuz… I really want to tell you but I can’t. You got it?”
“I see. But you still should go up to the class room. We can ask Takama-sensei later if you could change your desk with Akito - you know, the girl beside me. She hates me.”
“She does?”
“Yup… but she adores Koyama and Koyama’s sitting in front of you, right?”
“You mean we can ask Takama-sensei to change our desks so that it will be better for both of us?”
“And Akito won’t chitchat with Kusano anymore.” Junno tried to smile against the other guy, but deep inside he felt guilty. This… this guy was hated for helping Ueda. Junno could’ve done it instead, he wouldn’t be bothered by the hatred since he got used to it.
But Maru just got out from the shadows and smiled back.
