I admit it -- I rarely watch anything on teevee other than Science Fiction (and "House" -- but that's because of Hugh Laurie).
I'm not familiar with the books, but I will be -- as soon as I can get the first one sent via Inter-Library Loan (interesting, most "Dresden" books are checked out from the regional libraries -- more on that later).
It disturbs me that the critics (and the commentators here) are not willing to allow a bit of time for a series to find its way. Is this now the way it is and ever will be? I keep thinking about "The Next Generation", when it first came on. Let's face it, that first year (or so) was pretty awful. Imagine if it had been canceled before hitting its stride. What a loss. No "Best of Both Worlds", no "Yesterday's Enterprise"...
The Dresden Files pedigree is pretty impressive (shades of Trek!). Is there hope? I really want to believe there is. Can it be given enough time to prove the our esteemed commentators wrong? Goodness only knows with the ratings abyss. I'm willing to give the show the benefit of the doubt. It has an intriguing premise. The fact that most of the books are checked out from the various libraries in my region must mean that if nothing else it has left some audience members curious enough to (gasp!) read!
Here's my suggestions (remember, I've not read the books so I'm not predisposed to them): make it scarier, darker, moodier. Put Dresden into situations where he has to use magic. Do more with Bob (great character!). Figure out what you want to do with the annoying Murphy character (please -- no Scully/Muldar stuff). Play off the bizarre-ness of the alternative-reality "wizard in our midst" (recommend the wonderful book "Jonathan Strange And Mister Norrell" as a source of inspiration, beyond your current pantheon).
For fans of science fiction these are rather dark days in teevee land. With Trek gone from the horizon and Stargate so very sadly going the way of Farscape, I'm almost willing to take what I can get. The Dresden Files shows a glimmer of possibility. I'm keeping my fingers crossed (and looking forward to reading the books!).

Now that the first "season" has finished, I need to add that I think this show, and its lead actor Paul Blackthorne, really hit its stride during the 13 episodes it was on. My minor "complaints" expressed earlier have all been dealt with reasonably well, and the show is now one of my very favorites. I think Blackthorne is just fantastic, and when I read White Knight a few weekends ago (the latest Dresden Files volume), I saw him in my mind's eye as Harry. The writing is fairly good and the acting from all players is excellent. There've been a couple of really, really strong episodes (this is subjective, right? but I really liked Hair of the Dog, What About Bob, and Things that go Bump). They've ramped up his use of magic and Harry is simply and truly a marvelous character. If you're not watching this, and you're a science fiction or fantasy freak, you should be.
I found this show well acted and well written. NO, I have not read the novels but I throughly enjoy every episode so far. I think Paul Blackthorne is wonderful as the lead character. The show grew on me after the first episode and I just love Bob. I like the fact that his abilities were slowly introduced to the show. And as a witch. I love the use of everyday objects as his wand(i.e. the hockey stick). I also love that Claudia Black co-starred on the show. She is one of my favorites. I also enjoy the addition of the supernatural elements some are right on. Please, if you love detective shows tune in for something different. This show is amazing it makes me want to read the novels. Way to go Scifi Channel.
