During a commemoration for Japanese soldiers fighting in the US Army during World War II, Mr. Miyagi meets the widow of his commanding officer. He gets to know her granddaughter Julie, an angry teenager who is still feeling the pain of losing both her parents in an accident and is having problems with her grandmother and her fellow pupils. Mr. Miyagi decides to teach her karate to get her through her pain and issues and back on the right path.
In honour of the Japanese-American veteran troopers who bravely fought during WWII, the sage Karate master, Mr Miyagi, travels to Boston to attend a ceremony. There, in this unlikely place, Miyagi is introduced to the 17-year-old troubled teenage girl, Julie, who is constantly angry at the world and her abusive schoolmates, still unable to come to terms with the untimely loss of her parents. But before long, Julie will become Miyagi's new pupil, hopeful of teaching the rebellious youngster the true meaning of karate and self-esteem, through the knowledge of self-defense and respect for all living things. Could Julie be the next Karate Kid?
Ugh. Just thinking about this movie makes my stomach churn. This has got to be one of the lamest excuses for a movie franchise sequel that I have ever scene. This fourth installment of the "Karate Kid" movies is so bad it makes "Police Acadamy 4" look like an Oscar contender. I know at the time Hillary Swank was just starting out and had to take whatever she could get as an actress, so she has a somewhat valid excuse. However, Pat Morita should have given more thought about this script before signing on. After all the character of "Myagi" was the best of his career and he should have been more protective of this beloved character. I think where this movie suffers the most is just in the lame writing. The story is just so out to lunch and feels so amateurish that you cant wonder who were the hacks brought in to write it? Give you an example, the scene where Swank firsts meets Myagi. Swanks supposed guardian or maybe it was her grandmother, cant remember, tries to introduce them. She walks away in a huff and says "My name is Julie and I came here to live because my mother was killed in a traffic accident 6 months ago." I mean wow. It was so blatantly absurd. Talk about having a plot point thrown in your face and dangled. My jaw dropped to floor after hearing that and the movie just goes down hill from there. Skip this movie.....skip, skip skip.
I remember watching this movie at the age of nine and being completely smitten by Hilary Swank as the feisty Julie. Now years on, the film seems to be unable to match the greatness of it three predecessors, but I am trying to re-collect the feelings I felt as a child, being mesmerised by the film, the characters, the build-up to fight scenes.
The film is still fun to this day and it generally has some great moments that make it definitely worth ones time. The character Miyagi is still cool, I felt that we needed to see Julie learn a bit more Karate...But still it's a film that tries to journey into a new area...About finding one self and to a child this film genuinely excites.
If this installment is just slightly less laborious than Karate Kid II or III, it's not from Mark Lee's surprise-free script or Christopher Cain's placid direction, but because young Swank really might be a find. Early on, she's such a convincingly testy teen that parents may flinch, but she does seem to blossom before your eyes.
