A volcano erupts in downtown Los Angeles, threatening to destroy the city.
Fearing the worst, the geologist Dr Amy Barnes warns the citizens of downtown Los Angeles of an impending disaster after a tremendous earthquake takes them by surprise. With clear signs of an underground volcanic formation beneath the La Brea Tar Pits, the chief of the city's Office of Emergency Management department, Mike Roark, begins an investigation against the clock, when molten magma erupts, obliterating everything in its path. Can two mere mortals stand up against nature's wrath?
I started laughing long before the volcano made itself known by erupting in the tar pits. I wondered if the people who wrote this silly disaster flick had ever seen a documentary movie where geologists were monitoring quakes along the San Andreas Fault. Surely, there would be at least a squadron of geologists from the USGS (United States Geology Service) poking around those pits with various devices if they ever really did start to boil, but in this film, there was only *one* and she didn't
know what was up until it was almost too late. How did she pass geology school? But never mind, this was just a good summertime movie; one to check your brains at the door when you go inside the theater. I had the most fun jeering at this thing when they started putting up the cement barriers to "stop" the lava. NOT! Rent this if you want something really clueless to watch!
I am surprised to see so many negative comments about this film,granted it is not a great film but the performances and effects make this movie very entertaining. I personally liked this better than "Dante's Peak" and to be honest I think it is the best disaster movie released in the 1990's. Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche also turn in solid, convincing performances. The film's pace doesn't leave you enough time to think about the implausibilities in the story. But the story really isn't that ridiculous.
With its fake-looking technology and empty characters, Volcano eventually becomes as obvious as its what-if premise.
