In a dystopian future, a cross country automobile race requires contestants to run down innocent pedestrians to gain points that are tallied based on each kill's brutality.
In the near future the ultimate sporting event is the deathrace. Contestants get score points for running people down as they speed across the country. The sport has crazed fans who sacrifice themselves to the drivers. An overt agency is trying to bring an end to the immoral deathrace and has infiltrated one of their followers in to the race as a navigator. In the end of the race the lives of the competitors, the President and the deathrace itself are in peril.
I have not laughed so much as I did while watching this classic in a really long time. The low budget, cartoon-ish characters are so familiar and predictably drawn, complete with signature costume, vehicle done up with hilariously childish paint and body work complete with appropriate "extension" weapon (and placement of it- the Nazi car was particularly funny to me but I am notoriously juvenile) or other substitute prop to complete the silliest version of US in each relevant societal subgroup the writer has so bluntly illustrated to show each equally predictable and accurate purpose they must fulfill for the lighthearted satirical commentary on the actual total acceptance (and participation)in acts of violence by every person despite the usual claims to more admirable intentions from the usual Douchebags. I was so impressed with the very simple but "watershed" event used here to give this race a new but deserved challenge for the drivers that hadn't been present before: Hypocrite "resistance" group of nuts that can be destructive but suck at driving begin to level the playing field by killing Nero while attempting to score 100 baby killing points in the first 10 minutes of the race. She knew the bait, while ridiculously early in the race to not be a trap, was too easy for these mostly blind and stupid sport killers. This driver was too old school ridiculous and vain to last long in this race so therefore was the logical choice for first cut. His female navigator was more mother than weaker ego support partner which gave them that icky Oedipus vibe- too obviously weak for killing people while driving a car competently. Frankenstein, easily shown to be the most intelligent yet totally silly amateur Mexican wrestler-with-a-condom-for-a-costume favorite has the win already but his actual theatrical effort and self created legends coupled with a cool, smooth Charles Bronson- meets- Pink before the Wall came down cocky act that is reason alone to watch this movie. He levels the field one more by killing the Deacon for obvious reasons. Now everyone is in it to kill or risk being a wussy sacrifice. Prison gang guys are too dumb to even escape through the hole in the road and are awesomely wiped out- one does a complete flip with side roll upon landing. He should have lived...the other two stupidly died while coming BACK OUT OF THE HOLE...Don't deserve to live. Stallone's character is so fun for him that I couldn't get over how great he was here. He really goes overboard with Gangster; a wife beating moron barely functioning with a toddler's tantrum every 5 minutes. He adds more difficulty to their race by taking out his own pit crew! Of course he would! It even looks like he did it on purpose. Calamity Jane is the coolest and least nasty female character. She's the driver while Pete is her quiet do-boy for most of the race until she hits the mine. The Nazi couple are obviously here for a short time due to the weak man/demonic yet stupid blonde wife combo. She falls for the cardboard prop snare and somehow never pokes anyone with that three-inch meanie before diving over the cliff like all arrogant females should. Back to Frankenstein.The boots! The Hand Grenade!What cape-tossing! He totally slips her a roofie too- eliminating the hilariously obvious second obstacle for the driver...Passenger distraction, if not the constant bickering my parents regularly engage in while driving poorly. He really puts in some patience and witty conversation to get himself laid by this chick, actually lets her drive and miss a kill once(!), kills the Wizard, the crazy grandmother is straightened out via manipulating the old hypocrite to accidentally shoot his girlfriend/agent/shameless lying opportunistic whore--her granddaughter. She somehow isn't badly hurt, Granny joins their team while Frankenstein sells out like the whore he really was.
I'm astonished by the number of reviewers who see this film as "stupid". It has one hell of a witty script, with amazingly accurate jabs at everything from media hype to uber-patriotic propaganda. Just listen to the president blaming everything on "the treacherous French and their stinking European allies". Sounds chillingly like "Freedom Fries", doesn't it?
This wonderful little gem is far more intelligent that it's usually given credit for, and certainly smarter than 99.9% of the films made today. Those who dismiss it as stupid junk because of its outrageous premise are missing the point. I haven't seen anyone write a film this smart in at least 20 years.
Death Race is a maladroit but exuberantly gamey mix of social commentary and blue-collar goofiness.
