Two teenage boys unwittingly summon an ancient evil entity known as The Blind One by delving into black magic while trying to escape their mundane lives.
This hilariously disgusting, twisted, insane little gem from New Zealand is a must for fans of Evil Dead 2, Braindead and similarly gory low-budget horror comedies. If you're into those kinds of films AND you're into Metal, don't miss out on this one: it's a blast. And it was obviously made by very talented people; especially the camera work is fantastic. The gore effects are good, most of the jokes are funny (depending on your sense of humor), and the actors may not win any Oscars any time soon but they seem perfectly well suited for their parts.
Writer/director Jason Lei Howden has a background in effects work and it shows: despite the low budget, the production values are much higher than what you'd normally expect in this kind of film. The direction is wildly inventive and reminded me a lot of the early Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson (mark my words: Howden is a director to watch in the future). A warning, though: even a film like Braindead looks almost sophisticated and tame compared to Deathgasm; a lot of the humor in this film is very, very (did I mention: VERY!!!) rude or downright sick. Do NOT watch this if, say, you have a problem watching genital (and rectal) mutilations in graphic detail.
My verdict: This is a splat-fest of the first order for gore-hounds with a twisted sense of humor, a love for Metal and a very high tolerance for some really cringe inducing nastiness. It's a very well made film - especially for a first-time-director - and I absolutely adored every minute of it. 7 stars out of 10.

Whether you're going to love this film to bits or despise its very existence should be pretty easy to figure out. It's called Deathgasm. Its a black-comedy horror centered around metalheads. Its laughing at itself as much as you are.
Despite its perhaps limited appeal, Deathgasm does have a lot of qualities to boast of. It was clearly made on a low budget, but the acting, cinematography and effects are all handled with more than an amateur proficiency. However, this is far more a comedy than a horror film. If the references to nerd culture and metal/rock music aren't your thing, its probably not going to appeal to you much. If you're in the know however, there's a lot of fun to be had here.
I'm not going to describe the story because its by far the weakest part of the film. Things start off normal and the sinister events build to a climax: that's the basic structure. Possibly the most disappointing part of the story is the lack of a truly solid villain character. The writing, on the other hand, is pretty great. Some jokes land better than others but for the most part this is perfect film to watch with drunk friends (think Sharknado, or the Crank films). If you're a metal fan, as I am, I'm sure you'll also appreciate that the references are not overly ham-fisted.
The gore-horror sequences are also entertaining. This is where the budget is most visible, but the director clearly has an appreciation for his craft with authentic Shaun of the Dead and Evil Dead vibes throughout. And the practical gore effects are oh so satisfying.
If you're in this film's target demographic as I am, I'm sure you'll at very least get a few laughs. If not, just keep drinking and you'll get there.
First-time writer-director Jason Lei Howden (who has a day job working for Peter Jackson’s special effects house Weta Digital) has delivered something amiably silly, liberally splattered with human viscera, and scored to the punishing grind of electric guitars.
