In latter-21st-century Gotham City, The Jokerz, a street gang enamored of the city's infamous Clown Prince Of Crime, is breaking into a high-tech engineering plant to steal a powerful generator, a crime stopped by the new Batman (Terry McGuiness) and which puzzles Terry and his mentor, the elderly original Batman Bruce Wayne. The reason for this and other "geek junk" thefts is a mystery even to The Jokerz gang, who are now working for someone claiming to be the original Joker himself. When he makes an appearence at a charity function attended by Bruce Wayne (cover to steal another generator), the Joker taunts Wayne, and later sends his minions to attack Terry McGuiness while he attacks the Batcave. But the original Joker died forty years earlier, and why does this new Joker want high-tech items? When a shaken Barbara Gordon explains the fate of the original Joker, Terry begins to piece the twin mysteries together, culimating in a confrontation with the Joker that literally threatens the very existence of Gotham City.
This movie inspired by the animated series, BATMAN BEYOND, finds Batman facing his greatest adversary The Joker, only problem is that the original Batman, Bruce Wayne already took care of him years ago. So the new Batman, Terry McGinnis has to find out how is this possible and to do that he has to find out what happened only problem is that Bruce doesn't want to talk about it.
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000) by Curt Geda--It's hard to believe that a direct-to-video animated film could be better than the last four Batman films, but it is. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is the denouement of the Batman universe created in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. The story is the final passing of the baton from Bruce Wayne to protégé Terry McGinnis, who has now become the new Batman. This film returns to the roots of the Batman mythology by reviving the Joker, who was apparently killed in the Batman: Gotham Knights series through a brilliant story device involving the second Robin, Tim Drake.
When this video was first released much was cut out due to the intense violence and psychological complexity inherent to the story of the Joker's final demise. Thankfully, two years later a restored version of the original vision was released on DVD with a new PG-13 rating. The flashback sequences showing the Joker's apparent death are absolutely inspired. Mark Hamill has never been better voicing the man in the purple suit. His over-the-top insanity is the perfect counterpoint to the reserved Bruce Wayne and the sometimes over-eager Terry McGinnis. Joker's relationship with Tim Drake in the film is heartbreaking and terrifying simultaneously. Likewise, the psychology behind what it means to dress up like a bat and be a vigilante is explored in much greater detail than I think any previous incarnation of Batman. Through the story device of Bruce Wayne mentoring the new Batman Terry, Bruce gets to ruminate on what exactly it means to be Batman, thus deepening our understanding of what I consider to be the most intriguing heroic figure of comic mythology. The animation of the film includes some of the best action scenes in the entire Batman animated universe, but I think that ultimately its emphasis on the action detracts from the most important elements of the story, that of the exploration of Batman and vigilantism and developing the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Terry, and Joker and Tim Drake. If some of the action scenes had been cut down to better accommodate character and thematic development I think the film could have been even better, but considering that the animation is entirely hand-drawn it is truly a spectacular sight to behold. I've never really been that wild about this Terry kid, or this new costume. He seems to rely more on his Iron Man-like costume than his intellect and deductive skills, as the original Batman did. Having said that, my favourite part of Return of the Joker was when Barbara Gordon flashed back and remembered the last time Batman fought the Joker. That is an absolutely marvelous scene. You feel the concern and horror thunder through Batman as he's confronted with the atrocities Robin has endured, as well as his hatred and fury towards the Joker. The people in Warner Brothers animation have thankfully returned to drawing the Joker with the detail they had when Batman the Animated Series started. And as much as I don't really like him, Terry's climactic fight with the Joker is definitely worth checking out. As a previous comment said, it's a pleasant surprise.
"Batman Beyond" takes place about 40 years after the "New Batman Adventures" series. At the time of the show's release a precise date was given as 2039. Meaning Bruce Wayne quit being Batman in 2019 (as seen in ''Rebirth''). This also means the episode, ''Epilogue'' takes place in the year 2056. Terry McGinnis himself has a given birth-date of 2023.
Due to a political uproar against violence in animated movies at that time Warner Bros. canceled the release and edited the movie to a version that was then released worldwide. In the beginning of 2001 the original and uncensored version was released in the USA, on top of that in Anamorphic Widescreen while earlier releases had been only presented in Fullscreen. a5c7b9f00b
